Happy Women's History Month
The upside of global warming
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

Okay, the other news media all are dancing around the very real evidence that the weather we’re having is due to global warming, and no one will say the words, but hey, we’re not afraid to tell the truth here, so there you go. The cherry trees are blooming early and certain animals have crept out to blink they’re sleepy eyes too early, all because of a deterioration of our planet’s ozone layer called “global warming.” Now you know, and knowledge is power my dahlings, so be prepared with the perfect sun screen, and adequate moisturizers, especially if you have aging skin like yours truly. So, here are some good things to try, global warming or not.

I adore the new “Eye Contour Wrinkle Smoothing Concentrate” which I recently ordered from my fave cosmetics catalogue, Yves Rocher (www.yvesrocher.com), as well as the “Evidence” ear de parfum, which makes me smell like a rich starlet (or, at least I think so!). The eye cream is great to use at night, so you can wake up and look great (which proved a totally practical idea when the fire alarm went off in my building recently and I had to dash downstairs, barely awake!), in case there’s someone you want to impress, like a cute, female firefighter, yum! I also like their “Ode a la Joie” (Yves Rocher, not the firefighter, silly!) eau de toilette, which came with my order in a little sample packet. Ohh la la, c’est tres feminine and luscious smelling that you’ll feel romantic and so French wearing it. Trust me on this!

And a place I can’t sing the praises of enough, and have been spending more time in lately, is The Square Room, a handy and whimsical little gallery, housewares store that carries just about everything anyone would ever need. And if you’ve just moved into a new place, as I have, then their gorgeous salt lamps, natural dish liquid (with just the right scent of lavender), and Farmhouse Liquid Soap with lavender essence are things you simply must have. I tried the liquid soap for showering and was very pleased to have my entire bathroom smell not of “eau de kitty box,” but delicious lavender and the dish liquid is great for getting the same smell out of rugs kitty had been “bad” on. It’s great for washing other clothes too, and leaves everything smelling fresh and clean, but not chemically like those other icky commercial brands. Go in, check out the art, buy a candle or three, or some of their practically edible smelling soap (I bought the Mexican Chocolate and am waiting until the day I land a sex partner to christen the new place, to use it!). The Square Room is located on Pike “catty-corner” from The Wild Rose, an near the Elysian Brewery restaurant. Just look for their little signs near Bank of America and you can’t miss them.

And for those who have picnics on their mind, even though Spring is really several weeks away, here’s a salad that’ll at least make you feel like you’re on a picnic. I call this “Headache Relief Salad” because I had this massive sinus headache (probably the early pollen again!), last weekend and made this wonderful dish, gobbled it down and indeed, my headache went away (at least until I went outside, and until I put my hair up in those darling little clips that ALWAYS hurt my head!). So, layer one banana, cut into inch long pieces (two, if there are two of you, more if there are more), a small bunch of red grapes, a generous sprinkling of unsweetened flaked coconut (all of this you can get at Madison Market, my fave place to shop, because there’s always cute women there!), three pinches of raw flax seeds (good stuff for cramps too!), a generous sprinkling of Pumpkin Flax Granola (also in the bulk section of Madison Market), cover with your favorite yogurt (vanilla or plain is best), drizzle on some natural honey, add a pinch of cinnamon, enjoy! Even if your headache doesn’t go (which it should), you’ll feel so good after eating this, you won’t care, and you’ll have tons of energy too.

Finally, I’ve had to visit the fire station near SGN offices to get my blood pressure taken each day, so my doc can monitor if the new medicine is working to lower my blood pressure any. The high pressure is yet another symptom of my rare kidney syndrome, Gittelman’s Syndrome (which has a website if you’re interested in finding out more), and not fun. But, the fun part has been that every day I’ve gone in, I’ve had really cute fireman (okay, so I look at a boy once in a while, so sue me!) taking my pressure and they’ve all been super nice to me. Talking about feeling like a princess! Hey, if you’ve got to have something so rare even your doctor has to look it up on the internet, there should be an up side, and this is definitely an up side.

And what else have I been doing with my time besides lusting for cute people? Well, a friend and I crashed a party at the Seattle Repertory Theatre after seeing Mary Zimmerman’s delightful The Secret in the Wings (see review this issue). It was mostly a bunch of boring techies sipping martinis, but the bartender (a hot Viking/Celtic-looking guy named David) was very friendly and kept the homefires burning, if you know what I mean. He and this very, VERY cute, tall brunette femme who entered the room like a true diva (only no one noticed by me, because they were so boh…ring, made eye contact and really set my little heart a’flutter. Honey, I might LOOK at guys, but the “stuff” is all for the grrrlz!

Later that same weekend, I attended the last part of the Women of Courage Equality Day in celebration of International Women’s Day at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center in Rainier Valley. And let me just say I “represented” in a circle discussion about how to change women’s images in mainstream media, by introducing myself as a Dyke and saying the Gay marriage issue couldn’t wait (as some folks have been saying and one woman said at this discussion circle) until AFTER the presidential election. Actually, after my Cherokee blood stopped tingling and I calmed down, and everyone else did (after I “declared” that we, Gay folk aren’t the issue, it’s the damned right wing!), we all had a very productive discussion, exchanged cards, networked and I think some definite good came out of the whole thing. And the dance/drumming piece put on by Asian drill team of young men and women gave the whole event a wonderfully down-to-earth, real, culture-sharing feel. In short, I was glad I went, particularly because I got to catch up with my friend, Janine, who now has a new business, doing in-home spa parties. Call her up at 972-0240, and she can hook you up with a bikini wax, leg wax, or facial waxing. And hey, it’s been a tough year for her, so do call, give her some business and make life good for m’girl, ‘kay?

Finally, those of you who are reading who are of the goth persuasion, as well as being Dykes or Lesbians or Bisexual women, check out the new EBM and industrial night at the Mercury Nightclub on the first Sunday of the month.

“EBM is a type of industrial/techno, and we’ll be playing stuff from the ‘80’s, ‘90’s and some current stuff, and the idea of the night is to have people participate in the interactive stuff we’ll have around the room. We want to get away from the pretentious attitudes that have crept in lately and get back to the old days, when people actually had fun,” said Tara, doorperson (and friend from years back) at the Merc. She said she hopes people will come and make it successful and that in the future they hope to have more things going on that those who come out on Sundays will enjoy. The cover is four bucks, and they start at nine and go late. DJs Pyop and Brishan will be spinning and it should be fun. Hey, I’ll be there, so join me some Sunday.

So, that’s it for now. No “smut” this time...saving my brain for working on the book and writing more poetry to read at Red Sky Poetry Theater (my old “stomping grounds” when I was just a newbie in this town), but I promise something really tasty in the next column, so keep reading you little wild things, you! E-mail me and let me know what you think and how your feel, and feel free to drop by housewarming presents by the office to make my new place the home I want it to be. No spam and no weird stuff, okay? Kisses and hugs.
