| New York playwright Jamie Morris brings campy, over-the-top comedy Mommie Queerest to Jewel Box Theatre |
Joan Crawford. Oscar-winner. Clean-freak. Obsessed with wire hangers. Think you know her whole story? Well, here it is again... with a twist.
After sold-out, SRO crowds around the country, the new comedy Mommie Queerest comes to The Jewel Box Theater (2320 Second Ave.) in Seattle for a limited engagement March 31-April 3.
Featuring an all-male cast of four, Mommie Queerest tells the now-famous story of movie star Joan Crawford and her tumultuous relationship with adopted daughter Christina. But what if all those years Joan was really a man? And not just any man in drag, but the true Queen of Hollywood. For years she fooled the studio, her fans, her kids, and the world. That is until Christina finds out, plots her revenge, and publishes a scathing tell-all entitled Daddy Dearest. Even then, its Joan who has the last laugh.
Thats the premise of this play that features four actors playing 25 characters in 32 fast-paced scenes, all in the span of just 75 minutes.
In addition to having played to sold-out crowds in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Providence, Ogunquit, Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, Mommie Queerest has played to SRO crowds coast-to-coast from Portland (West Coast Premiere) to Provincetown, where the show had its World Premiere. Mommie has also played to enthusiastic audiences on Atlantis, the all-Gay cruise. It was the only show of the week where people were turned away at the door and a second show had to be added.
The play was just nominated for four LA Weekly Theatre Awards including Best Adaptation (Jamie Morris), Best Comedy Direction (Christopher Kenney), and two nods for Best Comedy Performance (Brooks Braselman and Jamie Morris.) The LA Weekly Theatre Awards honor the best of LA stages (up to 99 seats). The awards ceremony, now in its 26th year, will be held April 25 at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles.
The play features Brooks Braselman as Christina Crawford, Jamie Morris as Joan Crawford, Christopher Kenney as Greg, et. al., and Brian Rooney as Carol Ann, et. al.
Jamie Morris is a West Virginia native who lives and works in New York City. He has performed his sketch comedy and original plays at Carolines Comedy Club, Catch A Rising Star, and the Duplex. He is a three-time winner of the One-Minute Play Contest for his Life in Greasy Ridge series. His play That Greasy Ridge Look has been performed at The Duplex and The West End Theatre in New York City.
Come see what all the talk is about. Mommie Queerest will play March 31, April 1 and 2 at 8:00 p.m. and April 3 at 7:00 p.m. at the Jewel Box Theater at the Rendezvous Lounge (2320 Second Ave. between Battery & Bell). Tickets $15 and may be purchased by in advance through BrownPaperTickets.com or by calling their 24-hour hotline at (800) 838-3006.
