WRITE TO YOUR SENATOR

Already having passed out of the House, the Anderson-Murray Anti-Discrimination Bill has been referred to the Senate Financial Institutions, Housing and Consumer Protection committee for a hearing on March 22. This bill would make discrimination in employment, housing and other public accommodation based on sexual orientation and gender identity, illegal. The vote in the Senate is expected to be close so call and write your Senator today to voice your support!

Below is the sample letter. To find your Senator, log on to www.leg.wa.gov.

Dear (Your Senator’s name here),

Please vote in favor of SB 6019, the Anderson-Murray Anti-Discrimination Bill. This legislation would make illegal discrimination in employment, housing and other public accommodation based on sexual orientation. Washington would be the 15th state nationwide to implement such landmark legislation.

Discrimination remains a grave reality for many of Washington’s LGBT residents. In face, recent surveys show that most gays and lesbians have been discriminated against. The Anderson-Murray bill would add the words ‘sexual orientation’ to a list of categories under the jurisdiction of the state’s Human Rights Commission, including: race, creed, color, marital status and more. Passage would not effect the hiring requirements of religious institutions which are exempt from the current law and would not result in increased costs to businesses.

Passing this bill into law provides no threat to others and their well-being, it simply extends protection from outright discrimination to all Washingtonians, regardless of sexual orientation. That is not too much to ask. Please vote in favor of this bill.

Sincerely,

Your Name
