It’s Good to be Prince
It’s Good to be Prince
Patrick Hunter on his year as ISCSORE royalty

by Sara Michelle Fetters

The Imperial Court Sovereign Court of Seattle and the Rainier and Olympic Empires presents the 2005 Imperial Prince and Princess Ball and Investitures Saturday, April 2 at the Mountaineers Club (300 3rd Ave. West in Seattle). Door for the event opens at 5:00 p.m. with Investitures starting at 5:30 p.m. and the Ball following at 6:00 p.m. Cost for the event is $20. More information can be found at the Court’s website www.imperialcourtofseattle.com.

For Patrick Hunter G, Imperial Sovereign Court of Seattle (ISCSORE) Imperial Prince XXX, the last 12 months have been an impassioned and exciting blur. Known for his monthly community dinners in support of Seattle AIDS Support Group (SASG), Pat’s activities since stepping up into the nonprofit organization’s second highest position have been nothing less than astonishing. Active locally and known throughout the Imperial Court System, he’s been a dynamo of activity and community service helping ISCSORE raise much needed dollars for themselves and other nonprofits within Seattle and the Pacific Northwest.

Two weeks before his much anticipated step down on April 2, I sat down with Patrick Hunter to look back on his year, ISCSORE’s future, the state of Drag in Seattle and about what’s next for the seemingly tireless community activist.

Sara Michelle Fetters: So, first off, congratulations on completion of your year. Looking back, how are you feeling about the past 12 months?

Patrick Hunter: Good. Very good. I think I’ve been very successful and I’m proud of my accomplishments. But, I have to say, I’m also sad it is almost over.

SMF: For those that don’t know, what exactly is an Imperial Prince? Where does he stand in the ISCSORE hierarchy? What are his duties?

PH: The Imperial Prince and Princess are dignitaries to their community and in the other cities involved in the Imperial Court System (ICS). They are the second in command and are responsible for taking charge if the Emperor or Empress are not present or represented at an ICS function.

My duties are to represent my community in and/or out of town at various events, events like Dunshee House Christmas Tree Sale, or representing the organization at Seattle Men in Leather, Knights of Malta and other local nonprofits’ events and fundraisers.

The Prince and Princess are also responsible to sit on the [ISCSORE] Board of Directors and be directly involved in day to day activities and business of the organization.

SMF: It’s been a big year at ISCSORE full of many changes; some would even say great upheaval. Why is The Court of Seattle still relevant?

PH: The Court of Seattle has a lot of history. It has helped many other nonprofit organizations get their start, organizations like the Chicken Soup Brigade (now known as the Lifelong AIDS Alliance after merging with the NW AIDS Foundation). It has also given many political organizations a helping hand.

As for being relevant, Drag will always be a vital part of the LGBT Community and the [ISCSORE] is a great place to explore [those] talents. [ISCSORE] is also vital in the ways we as an organization support so many other non-profit organizations through our fundraising and community activist efforts.

SMF: One of the things main you’re known for around town is for your monthly community dinners for SASG. When did you start putting these together?

PH: Two years ago last November, and thank you so much for asking about these! Actually, I plan to continue with these every third Wednesday of every month at the Full Circle Bar and Grill. I hope people can make time to attend.

SMF: Now that time is getting short, what are your plans after you step down on April 2?

PH: I will continue to be involved heavily with ISCSORE, especially as one of my best friends, Rene, is the new Emperor. I also want to make sure and be available for the new Prince and Princess, be around to assist them in any way I can. It’s definitely the least I can do.

SMF: What’s the one thing that makes you smile the most when looking back on your year as Imperial Prince?

PH: The friends I have made and the heads I have turned, certainly, but also thinking about all of my accomplishments, too.

SMF: Any advice for the candidates running for Imperial Prince and Princess this year?

PH: Keep your head up and pay attention to what you hear and who you hear it from. There is a lot of mi-information floating around so make sure and do research so you can make informed decisions [that benefit ISCSORE and the Seattle community].

SMF: Any final thoughts?

PH: I want to thank my community for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity. My hopes are that I made you proud and (helped) give you a reason to be who you are.
