Mea Culpa to one local gallery for leaving them out of my review last week, and Im urging you, dear reader, to hurry up and get to Martin-Zambito Fine Arts (located on Pike Street, near Rosebud) to see work by multiple artists, now on display. The work is luxuriously beautiful, and a lot of the paintings are from vintage collections, and give the feeling to the viewer of being taken away to a calmer, quieter age. Only up through the end of this month, so whatre you waiting for, get on down there and check this great work out!
The other exhibit I simply have to tell you about will be up a little longer, but why wait to see Kay Millers magnificent paintings that employ found objects and layers and layers of brightly colored oils. I took the day to travel out to Daybreak Star Cultural Center last Saturday for a treat of an art opening, that included Native American songs and drumming, as well as one of the best spreads of food Ive ever had the pleasure to enjoy at any local art opening. But, the most stupendous thing is Millers work itself.
Several large paintings grace the inner walls of the gallery space, and almost beg the viewer to touch them, because theyre so tactile-looking, with glitter, coconut shells and in one case, hair from Millers dog, raffia and real buffalo hair in the one that graces the postcard which advertised her show to me. Take the time to linger over this work, and enjoy the view from the deck outside the center, or just walk in the woods around the center. And mark August 20th on your calendar, because on that date, Miller will give away the great horde of kitsch she has collected as a part of the installation in the other gallery space a the center. Some of it looks pretty tasty from a collector point of view, or, in my case, from the point of view of someone who recently moved and is always on the lookout for cool stuff to enhance the new space. Daybreak Star is at the heart of Discovery Park in Magnolia, and if you dont drive, take the number 33 bus, and have the adventure I did.
