National Black Justice Coalition applauds

The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), the nation’s Black Gay civil rights organization, this week applauded the California chapter of the NAACP for officially supporting the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act, AB 19. This pending legislation would end marriage license discrimination in California and would allow Gay and Lesbian couples in the state of California to marry.

“This affirms what we knew - namely that ending discrimination in all its forms remains a top priority for our nation’s oldest civil rights organization,” said NBJC Executive Director H. Alexander Robinson, “The NAACP will be an important ally in Californians’ efforts to achieve fairness for our families.”

“This is a huge step in right direction for equal rights and fairness for our families in the State of California,” commented California resident and NBJC Board Member Jasmyne Cannick.

In the Los Angeles area, the US Census counted 3,421 Black Gay and Lesbian couples and in the San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose area there are an estimated 2,114 couples. These numbers represent 6.6 percent of all Black same-sex couples in the U.S.
