Ah, the joy of anime, particularly if youre a fan, and not too close-minded to enjoy it and not think of it as a cartoon, which anime is not. And having been a fan of Katsuhiro Otomo since his breathlessly beautiful Akira first blew my mind back in the nineties, I watched eagerly his second film, Steamboy, which featured the voice of Patrick Stewart. And Im glad to say, I wasnt disappointed.
In fact, Steamboy, which presents a much more accessible world than what was shown in Akira, is even better. The action takes place in England in the 1890s and focuses on a plot by a brilliant but powermad scientist to shock the participants in the science expo taking place in London. He and his father have come up with a new energy device that will revolutionize how energy is produced and used, but also has the potential to be the deadliest weapon ever made.
Thus begins a struggle to keep this source, a steam ball out of the hands of those who would sell this potential weapon to the highest bidder and keep humankind from being destroyed in the process. And this mighty weight of keeping the steam ball from falling into greedy hands rests on the shoulders of one boy, who comes to be known as Steamboy because hes the son of the inventor, who works with steam and is named Steam.
Very exciting and full of the kind of graphics one expects from top drawer anime, Steamboy revels in the glory of telling an epic tale, much the same as anything by H.G. Wells, or Neil Gaiman, author of the delightful Sandman series. Definitely a must for any anime fan, and those who like their animated adventures to have a bit of heart and soul. Im certain this one will be every bit the classic Akira is and was and should keep fans loyal to Otomo for years to come.
