Dyke About Town
Dyke About Town
by Celeste Firetender

I was backing out of my parking space at Dick’s the other day and noticed an old man, head tilted to one side, unshaven, covered in an old blanket, sitting in the middle of the sidewalk in his wheelchair. People were just walking by and not paying him any mind. He didn’t move—I wondered if he was dead. Putting my cheeseburger down and finding a new space, I stopped. People were still walking by. He had lost his shoe under the chair and could not reach it. I drove away feeling very sad the we as humans on this earth can not even take a moment out of our day to help someone in need. It can’t help but make me wonder—what if I had been the one in the chair?

What an event Seattle women were treated to last Thursday at the Showbox! It was standing room only and filled with Lesbians all ages for the showing of the documentary Not Straight Forward, directed and produced by Jennifer Ting and Tan Vo of ting and Tan Productions. It debuted at the Seattle Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in October 2004.

10 BLIND DATES WITH TAN

It was the pursuit of finding that mate, one with whom you bond, share the same joys, you enjoy each others company—you know—that spurred Tan to make this film. Tan was a delight as she went on her 10 dates. I wonder how she got those since dating can be troublesome? (I personally would love a date with the woman in the film who had the horses, having been raised with them myself.)

I found it interesting that there are a lot of butch/femme dynamics in her film. Tan likes her femmes but was not that selective in her dates, being open to options, so true to dating form for Lesbians who choose to date Bisexual women, the attraction was there between Tan and her Bisexual date and Tan was excited about the possibilities. However the woman chose the man and ended any future dating possibilities. I loved the fact that Tan was open to dating all types, including butches, but they ended up more like kids at play. She did confess that they just weren’t her “type.”

Alas, two weeks later Tan is confronted with a decision: the Bisexual woman has returned, dumped by her boyfriend, and now wanting to date Tan again. What’s a butch to do? I am not going to tell you what Tan does because if you ever get a chance to see this film do it. I do hope it returns to Seattle in the future.

I would just like to add that Tan herself is so charming if you get the chance to have a date with her——GO FOR IT!!

Not Straight Forward will be playing in May 2005 in Switzerland and then on to New Your and Los Angeles in August 2005. I know I am going to tell my Ca. friends not to miss it. Bravo to both Jenny and Tan.
