Benefit planned for injured skateboarder
Benefit planned for injured skateboarder
Three local bands will perform at a benefit for a young man who is battling a brain injury. Seattle bands M-Set, The Broadcast Debut and Dope Smoothie will be joined by Royal Bliss from Utah for the benefit concert, which will be held on May 29 at Neumos, 925 E. Pike St., Seattle. The door opens at 8:00 p.m. and the show starts at 9:30 p.m. Attendees must be 21 or older. Admission is $7.

All proceeds will go toward rehabilitation costs for Daniel Johnson, 28, who was in a serious skateboarding accident on January 13, 2005. He sustained multiple fractures and a brain hemorrhage. Since then, he has been unable to work, and doctors expect rehabilitation to continue for at least a year.

Johnson’s injuries were severe and the odds of his survival were not great. After undergoing brain surgery, he fell into a coma. Since coming out of the coma, he is undergoing intense rehabilitation, learning to walk again and is trying to recover from the injuries to his brain.

“Some days are better than others,” said his sister, Sarah Bryan, who is helping organize the benefit with staff from Neumo’s. “He has trouble with short-term memory and gets a big jumbled at times, but we pray for the best every day.”

His physicians expect recover to take well over a year, although he’s already surpassed expectations by learning to walk so quickly. But Johnson can’t work, and his rehabilitation costs are mounting—so his sister and the staff at Neumo’s decided to hold a benefit concert.
