SHOW SOME PRIDE - DON’T LITTER THE HILL

Dear SGN,

Gay Pride is a little over a month away, and I feel that we as Gay citizens of the Capitol Hill and the Gay community should start thinking of pride. That we not only think about pride in being Gay in this liberal city and community, but pride in the community itself.

In a few short weeks, Capitol Hill will be host to the rest of the city and beyond. People from out of town and members of the straight community will come to our “home.” I feel that to show the rest of the world we have pride in community, we should all make an extra effort to clean up after ourselves to make a good impression. Isn’t that part of pride as well?

The other day I was walking on Broadway and saw litter and cigarette butts all over the sidewalk and gutter. But it’s not just Broadway - it’s Pike and Pine, 15th as well, and into our nearby residential areas. I thought, “Is this what the Gay community and the Capitol Hill community want as an impression of our neighborhood?” We want respect, but do we respect ourselves enough to clean up around us?

This year, let’s not only show our pride by waving the rainbow flag, dressing up as we see fit and having a great pride and rally, but let’s show pride in our whole community. Dispose of that cigarette butt properly, throw the Dick’s burger wrapper into a trash can, and all let’s all of us show pride in our great community.

Thank you.

SPECIAL SESSION FOR GAY RIGHTS?

Dear Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles:

I think you and other state legislators should ask the governor to call a special legislative session to pass Gay-rights legislation — this matter should not wait another year. We’ve waited long enough...and I don’t like having to sit in the back of the bus.

Sincerely,

Your Constituent,

David Chaffin

David,

I apologize for the lengthy delay in replying to you. Although I’m a supporter and sponsor of the Senate bill and voted for the House bill on the Senate floor, I’m afraid that the governor’s calling a special session would not be productive. We’re going to need to get another person elected to the Senate who will support the bill or convince one of the Senate Republicans to vote for it. That is a possibility but I don’t believe would happen in a special session.

CANCEL THE ‘LOVE WON OUT’ CONFERENCE

[Reader email this week to Northshore Baptist Church. -Ed.]

Lupe,

I am writing to ask the Northshore Baptist Church in Bothell to consider cancelling the “Love won out” event scheduled for June 25.

As a Gay male, I was very disturbed to read in the PI (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/225407_gay23.html) that you invited Focus on the Family to hold an anti-homosexual event called “Love won out” and allow them their first event in Washington state. I don’t know why God made me the way I am, but I am grateful for being alive and I don’t question this gift from Him. They disrespectfully judge God’s creation and try to poison other people’s minds. As a further insult, a day during the Gay and Lesbian Pride celebration in Seattle was chosen to hold this hateful event.

I hope you can understand how hurtful this is and contrary to Jesus’ message of love and inclusion. Once again, I ask you and your church to please consider cancelling this event.

Peace,

Bruce Barnett

LGBT CENTER NEEDS HOSTS

Hello Everyone!

We are in urgent need of some fun help this weekend at Neighbours for our Jell-O shot and a Brick event! We need at least one volunteer on shift (preferably two) from 8:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m. to host the Jell-O shot bar and sell “bricks” to raise money for The Center!

The night is split into two shifts: 8:00-10:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.-1:00 a.m. These nights at Neighbours are a fabulous way to raise money for The Center and they are a blast! So please let me know ASAP if you are able to fill a shift Thursday, Friday, or Saturday this week, or any weekend through the end of June.

Thanks so much for your participation!

Sincerely,

Zoe DePaz
