As you gear up for Pride, check out these inspiring art exhibitions
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

Are you having as hard a time as I, wrapping your brain around the fact the our annual Pride celebration only a few weeks away? Well, don’t panic (hey, I’m trying not to!), instead distract yourself by checking out these delightful art exhibitions around town.

First, if you’re on the Hill (and who isn’t these days?), do stop by the newly remodeled Globe Cafe and take a gander at new paintings by my own friend and sister poetry, Fryma Mantel. Bright, and full of whole little vistas of beauty, these paintings bring a number of artists to mind, notably Klimpt, but each is very certainly uniquely the artist’s own statement on the world around her. They’re gorgeous, and as interesting as the artist herself. Up through the month of June.

And keep in mind, if you’re a poet looking for a place to introduce yourself to Seattle’s poetry scene, do come by the next three Sundays for Red Sky Poetry Theatre’s open mic series. Sign-up is at 7:30 p.m. and you can generally catch rising stars there before they become stars.

Don’t miss the beautiful finds at Travelers, which is located on Pine and Summit, down the street from The Aurafice, (which should have some provocative new work this month worthy of seeing, also). There are a whole slew of antique rugs, satchels and walls, part of a collection that was given to the nice guys at Traveler’s after the previous owner at Fugio’s left due to a rent increase. Go by there, say hi to Alan and Uncle Leon, have some tea and set a spell.

If you happen to be downtown on your way to the last of the International Film Festival’s films at the Uptown, or just sight-seeing, check out the scrumptious art at Local Color (located in Pike Place Market, on the outside food area row). There are some exciting paintings on display, but my personal favorites are by Lainee Docken and April Ferry. Up through the month of June, you’ll adore the textured pieces by Docken and want to take home a piece by Ferry.

Finally, don’t miss the absolutely smashing collection of artworks at Art/Not Terminal Gallery (located at Westlake and Lenora, north of Westlake Mall). From sculpture to more lushly textured paintings by Holly Cannell (featured in the downstairs gallery), and including the annual photography show, there’s something for everyone in this show. And best of all, if you like a piece, it’s very likely that piece will be affordable, and you can take it home with you.
