Name an artist from Mississippi who is recognized around the world by his first name. A man whose musical style has influenced performers from jazz to pop to blues to rock and roll. A man whose original compositions have been covered by folks as diverse as Van Morrison, The Who, Elvis Costello and Bonnie Raitt. That’s right: Mose. Mose Allison, that is.

It’s been about a year since Allison, singer, songwriter and swinging pianist, appeared at Jazz Alley. Barely soon enough for me, though – every time I hear him sing, I marvel at his inventiveness (over 50 albums and 150 songs to his credit) and range. His song titles are half the fun of buying an Allison album. They make me grin because you always need to supply the second lyric of the song to make the sly humor click: “Your Mind is on Vacation (But Your Mouth is Working Overtime),” and “No Trouble Livin’ (It’s Just Dyin’ That Bothers Me)” and “(I’m Not Downhearted But I’m) Getting There” are a few of my favorites.

At age 77, Allison is only gettin’ better. This year he’s back with Seattle guests Milo Peterson (drums) and Phil Sparks (bass) for four all-too-brief evenings. Tickets are a bargain at $21.50–$23.50, so make your reservation by calling (206) 441-9729. Not planning on dining there? I don’t know why – the food is always seasonal and delicious, if a little on the pricy side. Their cocktails and naughty desserts are always affordable, though.

Pre-concert CD recommendation: The Mose Chronicle: Live in London, Volumes 1 & 2, featuring “I Ain’t Got Nothing But the Blues,” “You Are My Sunshine” and “Baby Please Don’t Go.”
