As fresh as it gets, Stimulus kicks the jams out of improv theatre and then some
by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid - SGN A&E Writer

The first thing you need to know to really enjoy the new improv piece Stimulus is that it helps if you’re half asleep. Really, in that state of partial wakefulness, time, space and ideas are fluid and so it’s easy to suspend the rules and accept that just about anything is possible.

Second, throw any rules you’ve ever had for how a performance/theater piece should go out of the window. Then settle down, open up and get ready to see one of the most unusual, fun and edge of the theatrical universe type of shows you’ll ever see.

It starts out in the dark, with the stage lights acting in the way a slow moving strobe light might, if there were such a thing. Four actors come on stage, perkily using vocal sounds and movements to create a “space,” a mood for the audience to anchor. And that’s the only anchor you’ll get watching this fastmoving, in your face, off the page work.

Each scene is set up from words, from gestures, from the previous set of variables by the four, who move from little vignettes to fullblown comic rides. And believe me, you don’t know what to expect, since it’s all done right in front of you, like magic with all the stops out. Of course, this means occasionally a line thrown out isn’t caught immediately by the other actors, but even those are fun to watch, and some of the lines that are caught are so funny, even my sleepy little, hormone crazy self found joy in watching last weekend. In fact, the more on edge you are, the more you’re likely to enjoy this show.

Heck, just go, and welcome the chaos and beauty that is Stimulus. Call (206) 755-8726 for tickets and keep in mind, the fun ends on June 18th, so better hurry. Trust me, you’ll hate yourself if you miss this show, which is brand new for each new audience.
