This weekend you'll have a chance to see "The Ted" (Ted Axe) and his band The Brats as they perform at The Mercury (one of the only nightclubs this writer will hang out in, thank you very much!). They'll be playing on July 24 for The Merc's new Sunday night specialty night (mentioned in my "Lipstick and Lust" column a few months back), with several other bands, and I'm sure it'll be a show worth seeing. The Brats go on at 7:00 p.m. and play until 9:00 p.m., but stick around for the other bands as The Brats have a way of drawing out some of the more interesting bands in this town and other places. And if you miss them this Sunday, see them at The Central Tavern in Pioneer Square on the 2nd of August where they'll be trying to charm the frat boys that usually hang out there. See you at one of these shows!

Also, don't forget that the Central Area Community Fair kicks off on Saturday, and is guaranteed fun for everyone, young and old. Heck, myself, I go for the strawberry shortcake and the barbecue, but the musical entertainment by local performers and the children's activities are worth coming for too. Held every year for the past five years, this fair draws an interesting mixture of Central Area denizens, as well as folks from all over Seattle and the odd tourist who happens to have found out from knowing townies that this is the place to be.

And if you want some culture and spirit mixed in with your enjoyment, do make the trip to Discovery Park and check out the 20th Annual Seafair Indian Days Pow Wow, which will be a three day event showcasing Native American dances from a variety of area tribes. There will also be a salmon bake on Saturday, dance contests, food and vendor booths as well as general camaraderie and a chance to learn more about Native culture.

Finally, if none of that hits you where you live, then maybe going to an outdoor movie will be just what you need to make this a joyful summer weekend. The new Cinema Diaspora (see the interview with Stephanie Cholmondelly, founder of Cinema Diaspora, in an upcoming issue of Lipstick and Lust) series, Cinema Noir, Cinema in the Park will be showing 'Smoke Signals' at Homer Harris Park (located at 2401 E. Howell St.) on July 23. The movie begins at 8:30 p.m. and you can bring a light picnic, or dine at one of the many eateries in the area. So there you are, some things that will keep your weekend hopping and give you that totally outrageous feeling of joy we all need these days
