Rep. Ed Murray, George Cheung sainted at Sisters' 9th Anniversary 'Beach Ball'
by Maggie Bloodstone

As of July 16, in the year of our lord 2005, there were two new stars in the firmament that is the Abbey of St. Joan's roster of extra-special people who have epitomized the creed and spirit of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence: human rights, love, compassion, freedom and fabulous footwear.

Rep. Ed Murray and Equal Rights Washington Board Member George Cheung were proclaimed "Saint Cybil Rights" and "Saint Cybil Liberties," respectively, for their tireless efforts to improve life in the GLBT communities of Washington state.

In keeping with tradition, nominees for divinity are required to perform miracles in the presence of sober witnesses, but we made do with the Jell-O shot-sucking crowd we had. Rep. Murray performed the feat of being in two places at once (and only used one mirror), and George Cheung miraculously turned water to vodka (according to Sr. Cynna Mankind, and we believe her).

In addition to this holiest of events, much soaking of T-shirts and shorts for fabulous prizes and other merrymaking, the Abbey Sisters presented the following worthy organizations with monies designed to ensure their good work would continue: American Veterans For Equal Rights, Lifelong AIDS Alliance, Rosehedge House, Rise N' Shine, Pierce County AIDS Foundation, Bend-It Arts Festival and the LGBT Community Center.

In all, a divine and indulgent time was had by all, including visiting novice Sisters from the newly formed Portland House, whose maiden (as it were) manifestation as wearers of the whiteface was this historic event. The Abbey (and attendant Saint, Our Lady of Chartreuse Mark Finley) would like to extend much love and congratulations to both our new Saints and new Sisters- stay tuned for our glorious 10th anniversary extravaganza in 2006!
