QArts Seattle presents 'Before and After' by Amy Abadilla
Show opens: Monday, August 1, 2005 Show closes: Wednesday, August 31, 2005 Location: Seattle LGBT Community Center (1115 E Pike St.) Artist's Reception: Saturday, August 6, 2005, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Cost: The show and reception are free although donations are gratefully accepted Gallery Hours - Noon-9:00 p.m. everyday, given volunteer staffing "Before and After" is the photo exhibit by Amy Abadilla presented by QArts at the Seattle LGBT Community Center's gallery in August. She originally began taking pictures as a way to compile subject matter for short stories. Over time, however, the writing fell away and the photography remained. With the encouragement of friends and family she began displaying her work at a variety of venues in Seattle. When describing her work they would often began with, "It reminds me of a time when&" or, "It made me feel as though.&" However you fill in the blanks, her work has an emotional response. The subject might be an examination of visual ironies in a building or the portrait of Sam, a friend whose life was taken before his time. Regardless, for Amy, "What I photograph is simply what I see," she says. She says that each picture represents that one moment when emotion and beauty meet at the snap of the camera's trigger and become a truth. "Before and After" represents an evolution of obsessions. From the photos of people through the shift from people to buildings and on to the visual ironies of everyday objects, Amy's work is a photographic journey of discovery she shares with us all. "Before and After" will be on display throughout the month of August. The mission of Q Arts Seattle is to provide a forum for the education, appreciation and preservation of the fine arts as they pertain to the LGBT community of Seattle.
