| Seattle PFLAG January meeting to discuss depictions of Gays in popular media |
"LGBT Relationships As Depicted in the Current Popular Media: Is Progress Being Made" will be the theme of the Seattle Chapter of PFLAG's January monthly Support Meeting. The movie Brokeback Mountain is grabbing newspaper headlines and awards; Suzanne Brockmann's 2005 novel Hot Target has been a New York Times best-seller, new TV shows are scripting other Gay characters. Is the popular culture portraying LGBT people's relationships positively or negatively? We will look at recent portrayals and weigh this question from the perspective of LGBT parents and friends. Opportunity will be available through group conversation for sharing individual perspectives and points of view about how the media is supportive or not supportive of LGBT relationships.
Our Seattle meeting will be held this coming Monday, January 9th from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Seattle 1st Baptist Church, located at 1111 Harvard Avenue at the southwest corner of the Union/Seneca Street intersection. This location is on Seattle's First Hill just northwest of Seattle University. Persons who attend needing support are given respect, caring guidance and individual attention.
The Seattle Chapter of Parents, Partners, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersexed and Queer minority individuals is a "we don't skip anybody" support organization for the entire LGBTIQ community. All are welcome to attend-as long as they are willing to accept responsibility for confidentiality after the chapter meeting. The chapter's efforts serve to fulfill PFLAG's mission of providing support, advocacy and education for and to the friends and families of LGBTIQ individuals in metropolitan Seattle and South King County.
Other Seattle Chapter support meetings are held in South King County at Renton and Des Moines on the first Wednesday and fourth Monday of the month respectively. Thirty-nine (39) other PFLAG chapters offer support meetings across the state. If you have further questions, please call the PFLAG helpline at (206) 325-7724.
