| Thelma Houston to rock the Teatro Zinzanni Tent |
Seattle native Christine Deaver returns as chef
When she first appeared in the Teatro ZinZanni cast, singing her famous rendition of disco-era classic "Don't Leave Me This Way," Thelma Houston had the audience dancing on their chairs. On January 26, Houston returns to the antique spiegeltent in the role of Madame ZinZanni. Seattle native Christine Deaver will play the role of the chef, and 11 international performers from six different countries will perform amazing feats ranging from contortion to juggling. A five-course, seasonal menu designed by Northwest chef Tom Douglas accompanies the three-hour performance.
Grammy award-winning Houston got her start singing gospel with the renowned Art Reynolds Singers in the late '60s. In 1972, she was the first artist signed to Motown's new MoWest label and she recorded several top-20 hits in addition to performing with some of the biggest names in music including Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Mary Wilson, Chaka Kahn and Patti LaBelle. This will be Houston's third appearance at Teatro ZinZanni in Seattle and she has also appeared in the San Francisco show to rave reviews.
Christine Deaver, a graduate of Ballard High School and the University of Washington, holds the distinction of being cast as ZinZanni's first female chef. She is a consummate comedy actor whose ZinZanni audience participation segments are among the favorites of this show staple. In addition to being a regular ZinZanni chef in both Seattle and San Francisco, Deaver has received numerous Garland, Ovation and LA Weekly awards for her work in theatre and as a company member of Zoo District Theatre Company. She has written and performed several one-woman shows and has appeared on television in "Silk Stalkings," "Candid Camera," and "Last Man on Planet Earth."
Houston and Deaver will be joined by ten world-renowned cirque performers including juggler Sergiy Krutikov (an original Teatro ZinZanni cast member), Russian hand-balancer Elena Borodina, Ukrainian contortionist Vita Radionova, and French acrobatic trio Les Petits Freres.
Making their debut in the Seattle show are the hilarious Portuguese acrobatic team, Duo Manducas and German clowns Lutz and Gusti. Duo Manducas' buffoonery is so funny that audiences will forget it includes some of the most technically challenging of acrobatic skills. German clowns Lutz Jope and Leon Kaufman (Mr. Gustav) are the perfect addition to the ZinZanni family with their classic training in pantomime and physical comedy.
Rounding out the new cast are Kevin Joyce whom ZinZanni audiences will remember as the Dali-esque Chef Platos and the compelling Maitre d', Demonio along with Heather Clemens (also making her ZinZanni Seattle debut) as the Diva.
Teatro ZinZanni runs Wednesday-Sunday at 6th and Battery in Seattle's Belltown. Tickets range in price from $99 to $109 and include the performance and five-course dinner. For reservations, please call or visit our box office at 206-802-0015 or visit us online at www.zinzanni.org.
