| ONE: A journey of discovery reveals timely answers to life's questions |
by Rev. Barbara Allen, CMP
- SGN A&E Writer
ONE is an award winning, deep, documentary movie worth seeing at least once.
It's the improbable, against-all-odds, well done, creation of a handful of people who together set out upon a journey of discovery asking the big questions of many of the world's most renowned and respected spiritual leaders, authors, icons and celebrated masters (as well as street people) about the meaning of all things.
The fourteen people interviewed include: Riane Eisler, Deepak Chopra, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Ram Dass, Robert Thurman, Thic Nhat Hahn and Sister Chan Khong, Father Richard Rohr and Father Thomas Keating.
The project began in the wee hours of April 2002 when the middle aged father of three from Michigan awoke from a sound sleep and was overcome by the compulsion to make a movie. He phoned his cousin and best friend, who eagerly agreed to help. None of these men were film makers. Local TV stations had been airing The Power of Myth, which had a strong impact on the men, who did as Joseph Campbell suggested, and "followed their bliss".
They had no experience, no connections, no script, no equipment, and no budget. However, they perceived there to be no problem because they believed that in an increasingly divided world, the power of Oneness longs to emerge, and is a power they felt would transcend any limitations of those who took up the cause. They went online to purchase a camera, and, then, under way, learned the basics of film making as best they could. The result is a powerful, remarkable and spiritually moving film that will make you think, might make you cry, and is likely to lead to deep personal uplifting.
These ultimate questions of life include:
o What happens to you after you die?
o Why is there poverty and suffering in the world?
o Describe God.
o How does one obtain true peace?
o When is war justifiable?
o Describe heaven and how to get there.
o What is the greatest quality humans possess?
o Why are so many people depressed?
o What is the meaning of life?
o How would God want us to respond to aggression and terrorism?
o What are we all so afraid of?
o What is your one wish for the world?
o How does one obtain true peace?
o Non-verbally, by motion or gesture only, act out what you believe to be the current condition of the world.
o What is our greatest distraction?
o Is current religion serving its purpose?
Conclusions included that: God is difficult or impossible to describe; the greatest distraction in our lives is the cell phone (perhaps phones in general); current religion may not be serving its original true or enlightened purpose; and that the greatest quality humans possess is compassion. The only justification for war is self defense.
By all means, see this film, and give yourself time to reflect upon these matters. There may be no better way to begin the New Year, 2006.
ONE will be at Seattle's Landmark Varsity Theater (University and 45th Street, Seattle) Friday, January 6th through January 19th.
