Dimitriou's Jazz Alley - Call for reservations (206) 441-9729 / $23.50

Something interesting happened on the way to law school for Joshua Redman. He opted to pursue a music career instead. Accepted to Yale's prestigious law program in 1991, after graduating from Harvard College, Redman sidelined his studies for a more ambitious journey. Four months later, he took top honors at the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. On the judges panel of that competition were Brandford Marsalis and the legendary Benny Carter. From there, it was no looking back for Redman. Signed to Warner Bros. Records, he released his self-titled debut effort in 1993 and has been filling our ears with the smoothest, grooviest jazz music ever since.

The Joshua Redman Elastic Band, featuring Redman (saxophone), Sam Yahel (keyboards) and Greg Hutchinson (drums), arrives at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley for a four-night stay beginning Thursday night. Redman has much to celebrate at the moment, aside from the New Year. He's currently nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Jazz Album category for his recording Momentum. The CD includes guest appearances by out lesbian artist Meshell Ndgeocello and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Whereas Redman's Elastic album from 2002 came off as an experimental project, Momentum sticks closer to familiar jazz sounds.

Wintertime is perfect for a glass of wine and great jazz music. You can get both this week by booking reservations to see a pro at work, someone well respected in his field and known for putting on a wonderful show. I've experienced Joshua Redman in concert before, two years ago, and I was so mesmerized that I didn't even finish my dessert. I'll give that chocolate cake another try when I sit down to see and hear Redman at the Jazz Alley on opening night of his upcoming Seattle appearance. Besides the music, the very sight of Redman, tall and oh-so-handsome, is enough to cause shivers. Partner those shivers with some wine, or my favorite - an inexpensive flute of champagne and a light salad, and mosey on down to Dimitriou's for a terrific treat. And for those who want to cozy up to Redman, be sure to check out next week's Seattle Gay News for a one-on-one interview with the artist. Free parking behind the Jazz Alley (in the alley) is available, as is a full dining menu. If going solo, the bar is a just-right area to enjoy the show. A. Rodriguez

Pre-concert CD recommendation: Momentum featuring "Put It In Your Pocket", "Lonely Woman", "Sweet Nasty" and "Double Jeopardy".
