STATE TO HOLD HEARING ON HIV NAMES REPORTING

The Washington State Department of Health is implementing a permanent change that would shift Washington's current name-to-code HIV reporting system to a names-based system. Many of our states leading advocates for people with HIV/AIDS believe the state's current system functions well and balances public health surveillance needs with individual confidentiality. The federal government will likely require all states to report HIV by name in order to qualify for HIV/AIDS funding after 2006. The hearing will take place on Wednesday, February 22, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Seattle Central Community College (1701 Broadway, Seattle) on the fourth floor in Room 4156.

GRANTS FOR YOUTH

The Colin Higgins Foundation is requesting nominations for its annual Youth Courage Awards. Each year the Colin Higgins Foundation salutes individuals who demonstrate courage in the face of adversity and discrimination based on sexual orientation. Colin Higgins Foundation Courage Award winners rise above such circumstances to inspire others by taking action, rallying support, or openly facing the systems and individuals that have taken a stand against them.

This year the Foundation will be awarding $10,000 grants to three individuals who are either: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning youth (through age 24) who have bravely stood up to hostility and intolerance based on their sexual orientation and triumphed over bigotry or; Allies (through age 24) or under who are working to end homophobia and discrimination against LGBTQ communities. The Foundation encourages all nominations to be made via the online submission tool: www.colinhiggins.org/courageawards/

CALL FOR ARTISTS

Jean-Paul Page, in association with the Seattle LGBT Community Center 's QArts Committee, is looking for artists interested in taking part in a group show centered on spirituality and religion within the LGBT community. The show is scheduled to run during July, 2006.

The show, which can involve individual and collective experiences of spirituality, has two primary purposes. One is to create an open, safe and fun environment in which to express, celebrate and create catharsis. The second is to open a dialogue and create conversation concerning our spiritual selves from the point of view, for example, of perseverance, adaptation, growth or healing.

A wide range of mediums is acceptable and Jean-Paul should be contacted for questions regarding this. A representation (digital preferred) of the proposed image or a description of the piece needs to be received by Monday, April 3, 2006. For additional information on the show, and how to submit, please contact Jean-Paul Page at jonpaw@yahoo.com.
