Gay Author Brent Hartinger to hold Tacoma book release party and fundraiser
Hartinger's book Geography Club had been banned in University Place schools

King's Books (218 St. Helens Ave, Tacoma) will be celebrating the release of author Brent Hartinger's new novel 'Grand & Humble' on Thursday, February 16th from 7-10 pm. The author will be reading from the new book at 7 pm and will be available to sign books the remainder of the night. At 8 pm, actors from Tacoma's School of the Arts will perform selections from the play version of 'Geography Club'. The event is also a fundraiser for the Scholars and Champions Association, a nonprofit raising money for the Tacoma Public Schools.

Brent Hartinger (is the author of four published novels for young adults. 'Geography Club', his first, tells the story of students forming a Gay Straight Alliance to fight against homophobia in their school. The book was recently banned in University Place, WA, although the ban has now been lifted. 'The Order of the Poison Oak', the sequel to 'Geography Club', has just been released in paperback. It finds the main characters from 'Geography Club' as counselors at a summer camp. They have to learn how to manage their charges and learn to accept themselves. 'Last Chance Texaco', published in 2004, is a novel featuring children living in group homes.

Brent Hartinger's latest work, 'Grand & Humble', is an intriguing and original work following the lives of two teenagers. Harlan is popular and seemingly has it all. Yet, he increasingly has uncontrollable panic attacks. Manny is nerdly and spends his time making movies with his best friend. He is plagued by nightly nightmares. The novel follows their disparate journeys, charting the paths where their lives intersect. The plot of the book is a complex mystery for the reader to decipher.

The Scholars and Champions Association is a nonprofit raising money for the Tacoma Public Schools, specifically Lincoln High School. They have been partnering with King's Books in a series of monthly fundraisers.
