Still looking for something to do on Valentine's Day? Here's an idea. Go see a film, and you couldn't pick a better, more romantic-and funny-film than newcomer Sanaa Hamri's 'Something New'. A provocative and timely film, 'Something New' deals with the uproar caused after a young, upwardly mobile Black woman (Sanaa Lathan) starts dating her white landscaper (Simon Baker from 'The Guardian').

Her friends, who regularly bitch and moan about the fact that there are a lack of 'single brothers' to date - something Kenya (Lathan) herself had also bemoaned - are scandalized and Kenya herself wrestles with what her friends think is right and what her heart feels for this down-to-earth man. And believe me, it gets pretty funny as Kenya tries to come to grips with 'cultural duty' and physical attraction to someone she never saw herself ending up with.

And no, I won't tell you what happens, but I will say, the film has a refreshing approach to the whole touchy subject of interracial dating. The fact that the film is directed by a woman might have something to do with the light touch in this film, and the way it rings true to me, even though I'm not looking for men, like the women in this movie. It will certainly have heads nodding in recognition among Black women, as the characters are believable and the scenarios are ones that just about every Black woman has found herself in at some point, whatever her sexual preference.

Then, if you just want laughs, with no real message, there's the remake of 'The Pink Panther', which stars Steve Martin in the role of the bumbling 'Inspector Clouseau'. Paired with 'straight man' Jean Reno' ('Crimson Rivers', 'Just Visiting'), this remake is in some ways, even better than the original, Peter Sellars version.

Martin re-creates the character of Clouseau and works well with Kevin Kline, who plays a stuffy, arrogant and ambitious chief of police. He puts Clouseau (Martin) on a big case, hoping that the usually bumbling inspector will screw up so badly that he, the chief can finally get the Medal of Honor he's been nominated for seven times, but never won. Only things backfire, and not only does Clouseau catch the murderer of a high profile soccer player, but he also finds the valuable 'pink panther' diamond that was stolen at the same time. And he gets the girl (lovely Emily Mortimer from 'Match Point') as well.

A true delight of a film, and one that should be a great 'date film' for Valentine's Day or any other time.
