World-renowned chanteuse Eartha Kitt returns to Seattle for a Valentine's engagement at Jazz Alley this week. Kitt created her sex-kitten act on stage at the beginning of her career, finding a perfect blend between sassy vamp and torch song vocalist. Her self-created persona made her a well-known personality even after her musical heyday in the 50's, earning her success as an actress in TV, movies and theatre.
She is very well remembered for her role as Catwoman in the 60's Batman TV series, but she has always been a fantastic cabaret act at heart, and one that should not be missed. Her rise to fame, from neglect and poverty as well as her outspoken liberal views on politics, have always made her a favorite for Gay and Lesbian audiences. She is a worldly sophisticate that is known to belt out a variety of songs in many different languages. If you haven't heard Miss Kitt perform a Rumanian chant on stage, then you haven't lived. She is sure to have you laughing while she camps it up and then will put you in tears when she torches through a ballad. Kitt is one of a handful of performers to be nominated for Tony (3 times), Grammy (twice) and Emmy awards.
The Valentine's Day performances make for a perfect romantic evening, especially with dinner at Jazz Alley. If you can't make it that night, then be sure to hit one of the following performances. Kitt just celebrated her 79th birthday and I can attest that she is one of the best acts to catch these days. I've seen her three times at Jazz Alley and will be sure to see her on this round as well. She will be there February 14-19. Set times are Tuesday at 7:30pm (Dinner seating is sold out for this show, but cocktail seating is available) and 9:30pm, Wednesday through Friday at 7:30pm, Saturday at 7:30pm and 9:30pm and Sunday at 6:30pm and 8:30pm. Visit www.jazzalley.com and www.earthakitt.com for more information. - R. Kennedy
Pre-concert CD recommendations: Eartha Kitt Purrr-fect - Greatest Hits featuring "Just An Old Fashioned Girl" and "Santa Baby." Also try the classic album Miss Kitt To You featuring "C'est Si Bon" and "Monotonous."
Bob Mould w/ opening act
Wednesday, February 15 - 9:00 pm
Neumo's - Tix through www.ticketswest.com / $13
Bob Mould's newest disc Body of Song is quite the energy booster. It can certainly do its part to get the blood pumping for your next workout or jog around the park. From someone who's been an on-again, off-again follower of his work, I find Mould's latest CD to be a refreshing, worthy listen.
Mould is the former centerpiece of the 80s punk unit Husker Du. The band was beloved on the indie rock circuit, which at that time was minimally low-brow. Their music never topped the charts or flooded the airwaves, yet they managed to drawn a loyal fan base and release seven records in a ten-year span. It was in 1988 that Mould would find himself on the solo wagon, signing initially with Virgin Records before joining Rykodisc and eventually winding up on an independent label. Mould has now been delivering his catchy blend of punk-club sounds to faithful Du fans and solo supporters for over fifteen years, and he isn't showing any signs of retirement any time soon.
On a return trip to Seattle, Mould will flex his creative talents at Neumo's Wednesday night. The crowd will likely be comprised of Du'ers and Mould clingers, who mostly land inside thirty and forty-something circles. Expect to hear Mould perform plenty of material from Body of Song, such as "(Shine Your) Light Love Hope", "Beating Heart the Prize", "Underneath Days" and "Circles". But he'll probably reach back to earlier recordings, including 1989's Workbook and 1998's The Last Dog and Pony Show. Those attending the concert can sip cocktails before or after at Neumo's or its settled-in neighbor, the Bad JuJu Lounge. But always keep the Gay bars in mind, like Purr, Madison Pub and The Cuff Complex, all within a two to three block radius. - A. Rodriguez
Pre-concert CD recommendation: Body of Song featuring "(Shine Your) Light Love Hope", "Paralyzed", "Beating Heart the Prize" and "Days of Rain".
The Turn-ons w/ The Purrs
and Young Sportsmen
Thursday, February 16 - 8:00 pm
Neumo's - Tix at the door / $6
Local indie band, The Turn-ons, celebrate the release of their newest LP Parallels this week at Neumo's. Formed in '97 by lead singer Travis DeVries and guitarist Corey Gutch, The Turn-ons were a brash and androgynous act that served up a fantastic show largely influenced by the glam rock of the 70's. Since the beginning, the band has grown in size as well as musically, proving they were not going to be cornered as the "new T-Rex." Instead, they took their act and music in various different directions and as a result have garnered more and more critical success in addition to a growing fan base with each new album.
If you haven't seen them live, then this is the perfect opportunity as they will most likely perform many of their new songs with a variety of fan favorites. The Turn-ons performances, like the music, are always evolving, sometimes melding film, lights and sound effects. The best thing about them as a band is that the show never eclipses the music. Whether it's a grinding glam beat, or a spacey Brit-psych pop sound, the songs are always well written and amazingly produced. The high heels and glitter may be gone from the early days, but they're still hot as fuck on stage and guaranteed to put on a great rock show. On a purely superficial note, I have to say that this band is total sex, and there are going to be a lot of hot indie Queers at this show. But you didn't hear that from me.
Young Sportsmen and The Purrs will open for The Turn-ons Thursday night, so be sure to get to Neumo's early because they're not to be missed either. You can pick up their new album Parallels at the show or hit one of the local music stores like Sonic Boom or Easy Street Records to get a copy. Visit www.neumos.com or www.theturn-ons.com for more information.
Pre-concert CD recommendations: Parallels featuring "Strange as Snow" and "Eastern Hollows." Also try East featuring "Neighborhood Killer" and "New Jesus."
