Northwest Flower
and Garden Show
Convention Center
February 8-12
It's gone now, and so is the lovely weather with all of that sunshine we were having last weekend when I, full of adrenaline and romantic notions, took myself over to the Convention Center for the 2006 Northwest Flower and Garden Show to check out all of the fantasy gardens, and pick up a few cards and a present for the 'other sweetie'.
The first thing that hits you when you enter the Convention Center for the Flower and Garden Show is that smell of growing things and the smell of those gorgeous orchids. And if you have a 'brown thumb' like I do (I can't even get those little potted plants from Trader Joe's to last longer than a week!), then wandering around in a place where people who garden hang, is pretty wonderful. It was also delightful to talk to a few of the exhibitors, especially the two gentlemen, one of whom is Gay, about the garden with a bed in the center which just begged to be romped on. He said that there had been two weddings there and that he, being Gay, had a hard time being present for those weddings, when he, or any other Gay couple couldn't have the same freedom. He also said that if the laws were different, he would have welcomed a Gay wedding to the garden display. Maybe next year, we all can hope.
And even though the rain has returned, I have the memory of all of those beauteous gardens and the knowledge that Spring will come eventually, though snow might be on the ground by the time you read this. That way, for those of you who missed all of that growing loveliness, you can still plant seeds, wait and be awed by blooms of your own, or carrots, beets, or lettuce.
