Coronation 2006: Emperor and Empress of Seattle crowned
Coronation 2006: Emperor and Empress of Seattle crowned
by David Luc Nguyen and Teriyaki Temple - SGN A&E Writer

It looked like a Gay circus as the Imperial Sovereign Court of Seattle hosted Coronation 2006: A Polynesian Affair last Saturday, February 18th at the Mountaineers Club.

As guests opened the double doors leading into the Olympus Ballroom they were greeted by a spectacle of bright and colorful Polynesian inspired costumes, drag queens dazzling in evenings dawning punch bowl sized crowns, towering nuns (aka. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence), sexy leather clad men (Seattle's Men in Leather, a wee bit of Scottish with men wearing kilts intermittent with a plethora of guests from all over the country who dressed to the nines dripping in "bling."

Attendees of the ball came to celebrate the successful reign of Emperor Rene and Empress Asia. Both served as leaders of Seattle's drag community and were active community members who raised money for charity and raised awareness for social issues.

The evening was packed with special performances by visiting guests, friends of Rene and Asia and candidates who desired to be their successors. The evening culminated with the announcement of the election results revealing that Larry Ryan would become Emperor XXXII and Aleksa Manila would join him as Empress XV of Rainier and Olympic Empire.

The election of Larry and Aleksa brings hope to a slowly dying Imperial Court of Seattle Organization, which in the past few years has seen a downward spiral in membership, community interest and visibility. Both Emperor Larry and Empress Aleksa share the common goal of leading the organization back to its former stature and glory befitting of their titles. They do however take different approaches by defining a successful reign in different ways.

Larry believes he can reach his goals by taking a more community conscious approach. "A successful year for me as Emperor would be to have the Court of Seattle be the driving force in the community that it once was. To work along side other LGBT organizations to accomplish mutual goals of respect, teamwork, and prosperity for the LGBT community. This is not something I can do on my own. It will take a commitment from all the LGBT community organizations."

While Aleksa believes success comes from taking a more business like approach. "A successful year as an Empress would mean being able to organize at least 2 fundraisers on behalf of the Court; be an active member of the organization, attend as many court-affiliated and community events as possible and be a an ambassador of goodwill."

Both do agree that personal success will include finishing a year with great friendships, wonderful memories and becoming a small part of the organization's rich history. Both candidates have the experience and skills necessary to achieve success due, in part, to their history of serving the organization as board members/officers and title holders.

We wish the Lapis & Onyx Leather Cowboy Larry Stewart Ryan Emperor 32 of Seattle and The Pearl of the Pacific & Orient Seas "The Thrilla from Manila" and Empress 35 of Seattle the best of luck on their reign of love, health and prosperity.
