| Black History Month celebrated with film honoring Lesbian poet Audre Lorde |

I got to tell my personal story about meeting Lesbian poet and activist Audre Lorde, (who succumbed to cancer in the mid-nineties), and others got to learn more about the self-proclaimed 'warrior', mother and GBLT rights activist last week at the monthly Radical Women meeting. The meeting, which brought together members and those who were on hand to learn more about Lorde, had as its focal point a film on Lorde, which showed footage from some of her speeches as well as spliced footage from early New York, where she spent a great deal of her childhood and part of her adult life.
Those who viewed the film expressed delight at learning more information about a poet some knew little about, except from books or from mention in other films or media presentation about Black history. Several people talked about how, as Socialists, they were glad to know that Lorde, an avid Socialist herself, spoke out on political issues, particularly America's role in past and current political upheavals like the Iraq war. Others spoke of how hearing of her courage in the face of the systems such as racism, sexism and homophobia. They were inspired to work harder to change current inequalities facing Gays and Lesbians and particularly Lesbians of color.
And if you missed this uplifting and thought-provoking event at New Freeway Hall, you can come down on Saturday, when Radical Women will be sponsoring a benefit for New Orleans that will include not only a genuine cajun gumbo feast, but music and speakers as well. For more information on this event and to find out about ride shares and childcare, call 722-6057.
