Where It's At
SUPERGRASS LIGHTING UP AT THE SHOWBOX
by Lee Arthurs - SGN A&E Writer

Supergrass w/ Pilotdrift

Saturday, February 25 - 8:00 pm

The Showbox - Tix through www.ticketswest.com / $20 adv, $23 dos

Supergrass has a peculiar way of bending your ear, playing something hauntingly familiar but with a strange unexpected twist. They've been doing this since the early 90's when they first appeared with the album I Should Coco. Unlike a majority of Britpop bands popping up at the time, Supergrass deserved the hype surrounding their debut.

10+ years later finds the recent release of Road to Rouen featuring a brilliant array of expansive, richly textured tunes. Gaz Coombes and his mates craft some of the most compelling songs. Their melodies don't just stick; they creep in slowly and from out of nowhere. Road to Rouen has the inner workings of a classic and I'm personally excited to hear Supergrass perform the new tracks live when they make a stop at The Showbox Saturday night.

My pre-concert picks below are from their new album, but I'd also check out tracks like "What Went Wrong (With Your Head)", "Alright" and "Rush Hour Soul" from previous efforts, to really dive into Supergrass' Britpop sensibility.

Openers Pilotdrift are an up-and-coming group from Texas receiving a lot of hype. And like Supergrass, deservedly so. Their first album on Good Records, Water Sphere, is complete with unusually beautiful songs anchored in a sci-fi dreamscape. They should be a perfect fit for Supergrass' brand of headspace rock.

Pre-concert recommendations: Road to Rouen featuring "St. Petersburg", "Road to Rouen", "Sad Girl" and "Low C" and Water Sphere featuring "Caught In My Trap", "Passenger Seat" and "Late Night In A Wax Museum".
