Ledge Magazine Spring 2006 issue now available
Ledge Magazine Spring 2006 issue now available
HIV/AIDS magazine by and for Black college students

L.I.F.E. AIDS (Leaders In the Fight to End AIDS), a national student-led HIV/AIDS awareness and education capaign sposnoered by the Black AIDS Institute, has released the second installment of LEDGE - the nation's first and only HIV/AIDS magazine produced by and for Black college students. The free publication destroys myths, empowers young people with useful information, and facilitates much needed dialogue among Black college students and the people in their lives.

The spring 2006 issue of Ledge started arriving on the college campuses in late February. The magazine will also be made available for free to community centers, health clinics, advocacy groups, churches and any other outlets fighting the disease in our community.

The issue will be available online at BlackAIDS.org in the coming days. For information on obtaining print copies, please contact the Institute at (213) 353-3610.

"The success we had with the first issue was eye-opening," says Institute CEO Phill Wilson. "The role our young people must play in combating this epidemic cannot be overstated, and any effort that gets them more engaged is a major plus. I believe we were all pleasantly surprised at just how well the magazine was embraced from campus to campus, as well as by the community in general."

Howard University graduate Freddie Allen again serves as editor-in-chief, with a team of student writers hailing from such schools as North Carolina A&T, Hampton University, Langston University and Howard University, among others. Ledge also features original photography provided by students.

The spring 2006 issue is 32-pages of hard-hitting news, insightful analysis, and provocative commentary on issues of importance to today's Black college student. The stories address AIDS-specific issues such as vaccine research, treatment for those living with HIV, the upcoming 25th anniversary of the epidemic, and updates on student-driven, anti-AIDS activities from the past year.

But Ledge also aims more broadly. This issue tackles a wide range of health and lifestyle concerns, from domestic violence to the ups and downs of dating on campus. The magazine also features an informative discussion with TransAfrica Forum President Bill Fletcher about key issues impacting the African Diaspora.

"This edition picks up where the debut issue left off, and then takes it up a notch," says Allen. "We wanted the second issue to show growth in all areas, including getting more students involved, as well as the content and direction of the stories.

"While it is important that we arm readers with accurate information and statistics, which we do, it is equally important that the magazine reflect the energy and feel of today's students," Allen adds.

Institute board member and media consultant Chris Cathcart led the Institute's initiative in creating Ledge in 2004. Cathcart serves as managing editor and project coordinator for the magazine. The Institute publishes Ledge as part of its L.I.F.E. AIDS program, a joint-initiative with the Magic Johnson Foundation aimed at mobilizing Black college students to impact the disproportionate effects of HIV/AIDS on the Black community.
