Marriage equality case argued in Connecticut this week
Marriage equality case argued in Connecticut this week
On Tuesday, March 21, 2006, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) will argue a case seeking an end to marriage discrimination against same-sex couples in Connecticut. The suit, Kerrigan and Mock v. Department of Public Health, was filed in August 2004 on behalf of eight Connecticut couples who sought and were denied marriage licenses.

Tomorrow's hearing starts at 10:00 a.m. before Judge Patty Jenkins Pittman at New Haven Superior Court in Courtroom 4E. The courthouse is located at 235 Church Street in New Haven.

GLAD Senior Staff Attorney Bennett Klein will argue that the refusal to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples violates the Connecticut Constitution's guarantees of liberty and equality for all of the state's citizens. "At issue in this case is whether Gay and Lesbian people in Connecticut can be excluded from making one of the most defining choices of a lifetime: to marry the person they love," said Klein.

The plaintiff couples in the case are: Elizabeth Kerrigan and Joanne Mock of West Hartford; Jeffrey Busch and Stephen Davis of Wilton; Suzanne and Geraldine Artis of Clinton; John Anderson and Garrett Stack of Woodbridge; Janet Peck and Carol Conklin of Colchester; J.E. Martin and Denise Howard of Stratford; Barbara and Robin Levine-Ritterman of New Haven; and Damaris Navarro and Gloria Searson of West Haven.

The plaintiff couples and their attorneys will be available for comment on the case after argument outside the New Haven Superior Courthouse.

In addition to GLAD lawyers Bennett Klein, Mary L. Bonauto, Karen Loewy, and Jennifer Levi, the legal team includes Maureen Murphy of Murphy, Murphy, Nugent in New Haven, Kenneth J. Bartschi and Karen Dowd of Horton, Shields & Knox in Hartford, and Renee Redman of the Connecticut Civil Liberties Union.

More information on the case, the plaintiffs, and GLAD is available at www.glad.org.
