Youthopolis Awards to recognize exceptional Queer youth
Youthopolis Awards to recognize exceptional Queer youth
by David Luc Nguyen - SGN Contributing Writer

The fourth annual Youthopolis awards will be taking place at the Century Ball Room on Friday, March 31st, 2006 honoring members of Seattle's Queer youth community who have demonstrated leadership and excelled in community service. Conceived in November of 2002 by the MPowerment Project of Life Long Aids Alliance, the Youthopolis Awards Ceremony was created to acknowledge exceptional youths for their efforts on issues important to the GBLTQ community including: homeless advocacy, alcohol and other drug related prevention/education, HIV/AIDS education/prevention, community service, artistic contributions, activism for Queer and Transgender awareness and rights, and for progress with straight alliances/allies.

Youthopolis award recipients are selected by a judging panel who carefully review nominations of deserving youths from community leaders. Nominations were submitted one month prior to the ceremony and include descriptions of the youth's social contributions, community service record, and other notable achievements. This year the Youthopolis Committee will recognize fifteen worthy recipients.

The awards will be presented through-out the evening while recipients and other attendees are treated to special performances by local talent and feast on a buffet style dinner. The evenings emcees Shaka Kwan and Teriyaki Temple are expected to provide amusing commentary, introduce the special guest performances, and announce some of the awards presenters including; The honorable Mayor Greg Nickels, City Councilwoman Sally Clark, Marsha Botzer and local drag personality Sylvia O'Stayformore just to name a few.

The Youthopolis Awards Ceremony will begin at 6:30 pm at the Century Ball Room located at 915 East Pine (Street-Second Floor) in Seattle (No admission fee). The ceremonies producers suggest showing up early because of the positive response in previous years with attendance usually well over 150.
