THE THREE MUSKATEERS - swordfights its way romantically at The Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center
THE THREE MUSKATEERS - swordfights its way romantically at The Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center
by E. Joyce Glasgow - SGN A&E Writer

The Acting Company of New York, a 2003 Tony Honoree for Excellence in Theatre, performed "The Three Muskateers" on Friday, March 10th, as part of their three play touring repertoire at The Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center. This adaptation was taken from the Alexander Dumas novel. The Company was founded in 1972 by John Houseman and current Producing Director Margot Harley with members of the first graduating class of Julliard's Drama Division. Some luminaries who have had the chance to practice their craft in the Company are Kevin Kline and Patti LuPone.

The Acting Company is dedicated to bringing young actors, 20's through 40's, to national audiences and is committed to educating middle and high school students in communities which have little access to the arts and arts education.

"The Three Muskateers" was well-acted by the entire ensemble, with a special nod to Henry Vick as the hysterical, appropriately foppish King, and was fun to see, especially because one doesn't often see productions of this great romantic swashbuckler. The fight scenes were well-choreographed, the costumes effective and the company made great use of a very simple set. This is definitely a play which showcases male actors and disappointingly gives little to do for most of the female cast. I would have preferred to see a production with more "equal opportunities." This play is traveling in repertory with "Macbeth" and "The Lottery."

Opened in 2003, The Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center provides a home for local artists, a touring venue for regional and international artists and cultural programming for both the Renton School District and the community. For information about their eclectic season subscription performance series or other events, visit their website at www.renton.wednet.edu/ipac/about.html or call (425) 204-3454. The Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center is located in Renton High School, 400 S 2nd St, Renton, WA.
