Moisture Festival 2006

Burlesque (at The Liberty)

April 7th

From the first moment that German comedian Hacki Ginda stepped onto the poshy stage at the Liberty, in Fremont, I knew this show was going to be a little different from the other Moisture Festival shows I'd seen earlier. And watching a group of women dressed like 'flappers' ascend the hoops above us, and do some of the sexiest aerials I've ever seen, I was very certain this show would be fun.

Staged in an intimate cabaret style, last weekend's burlesque show (one of their most popular events at the two week festival) had something for everyone. Everyone who likes a little raunch from time to time, that is. Backed by the wonderful Zebra Kings/Orchestra Zirkonium, the aerial stylings of the Flapper hoops, gave way to the even more risque performances by burlesque stars Pa-Ooh-la, Miss Indigo Blue (and man, could she twirl those tassels and wiggle enough to cause a shock wave!), and my favorite, The Swedish Housewife, who wore the hottest outfit I've seen outside of The Wet Spot.

But the piece de resistance of the night was the imaginative 'strip dance' that local choreographic genius, Wade Madsen staged in gray skivvies. His pantomime of a woman stripping (or maybe a drag queen stripping?) brought appreciative yells and applause from the to capacity audience and was most definitely one of the most physically perfect pieces I've ever seen Madsen perform. Heck, this beat out my before favorite, the dance he did with Saiko Kobayashi several years ago, in platform, red shoes to 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'.

Another favorite was local performance artist, Tamara the Trapeze Lady, who leapt into her act wearing green feathers, even down to her shoes (which she threw my way!), and performing on a silky, silver trapeze drape of cloth. Sizzling for sure! And if you missed this year's Moisture Festival, you can still check out performances by Burning Hearts Burlesque, Circus Contraption and future performances of Wade Madsen, Miss Indigo Blue and Tamara the Trapeze Lady, around Seattle over the coming months.
