IN THEIR OWN WORDS: State Sen. Adam Kline
IN THEIR OWN WORDS: State Sen. Adam Kline
What a life! We must have stolen fire from Zeus, for it seems the gods make us roll this rock up the mountain, year after year, only to see it roll down again. And year after year, with the leadership of Cal Anderson, then Ed Murray, we've pushed it back up, almost to the summit. Almost. It's always almost. We are almost there, we are never there.

This year, we actually got the rock to the summit, got it as far as we could, finally rolled it to a stop. When the gods would most torture us, they let us succeed. No, almost succeed. We cannot go on, we must go on.

The gods, it seems are capricious spirits and are now going to debate our fate. Another three decades of rolling this rock up the mountain? Will they allow us to succeed, or to almost succeed? Will they accept our work as expiation of our sins, or rise in anger to send us crashing even more loudly to the bottom?

Is there an end to this struggle? I believe there is not, not in our lifetimes. We will have won a battle if our rock stays in place, but even then the struggle will continue. We delude ourselves if we believe that our generation will live to see the gods rise up in unison in the great light of wisdom and divine love. Our contribution is for following generations. We knew that going in, didn't we?

Many public discussions carry moral weight - moral in the honest use of the word. This one focused attention on a significant social movement which history will identify with this decade. We moved the rock. Perhaps we can keep it there this time. We, collectively, moved the rock.
