Celebrating 20 years of eclectic artistic performances for children of all ages, the 2006 Seattle International Children's Festival will present special guest, John Lithgow, actor and children's book writer in his show, "A Lithgow Paloozical - Concert for Kids", along with over eleven international acts at Seattle Center, May 15th-20th, with additional performances in Tacoma on May 22nd.
The Children's Festival is one of my absolute favorite festivals that happen in Seattle all year. It is world class for kids and adults alike. Many of the artists perform in large festivals around the world and it is a rare privilege to have them right here, in Seattle Center, conveniently available to all of us at the Children's Festival. Many of us think that this is Seattle's best kept secret, so why keep missing out? Get on down to the Seattle International Children's Festival!
Following is a list of this year's line-up:
"ISH" (Netherlands), all-skating, all-dancing revue features high-energy displays of champion level extreme sports and martial arts with an award winning DJ. "OKidOK" (Belgium), U.S. Premiere, are two clowns, who with extravagant costumes and make-up evoke the great tradition of Russian clowning while developing their own unique style. "Warsaw Village Band" (Poland), brings ancient Polish melodies into the 21st century with their "hard core folk", topping the world music charts in Europe. "Tumen Ekh National Song and Dance Ensemble" (Mongolia), is celebrating its 800th anniversary, having been founded with the enthronement of Genghis Khan in 1206 A.D. Their energetic and colorful performance features an exuberant display of the folk arts of Mongolia's diverse ethnic groups, including mask dancing and throat singing.
"Gangebe Brass Band" (Benin), is a physically exuberant ten-piece band which blends ancestral African melodies and drum rhythms with European, jazz influenced brass instrumentation, creating motifs that range from soul, to Dixieland, to swing. Fawzy Al-Aiedy (Iraq), in a U.S. Premiere, is a recognized master of the Oud (lute) and authority on music of the Middle East. An award-winning musician and recording artist, he and his combo will perform music from around the Arab world. "Daedalus Company" (Israel), in a U.S. Premiere, lead the audience on a journey into the "Laboratory of Human Curiosity", telling of real inventions that happened accidentally, in a visually amazing, wordless investigation that integrates puppetry and shadow theater with engaging human performers. "Theater Triebwerk" (Germany), will present two different shows; "Moby Dick", the epic tale of the Great White Whale, performed by three actor/storyteller/musicians and a charming story of Bolton, a blustery lion and his warm relationship with an affable camel.
"ANCEA" and "Duo En" (U.S.A./Japan), present a Children's Festival World Premiere Commission that combines Japanese anime (animation) and classical and contemporary Japanese music, exploring traditional Japanese legend and popular culture in a multi-media production that weaves theater, video, music and folktales. Cowboy Randy and Friends (U.S.A./Mongolia/Argentina), present another Children's Festival World Premiere Commission with cowboy yodeling and trick-roping. Randy Erwin (a voice in the Disney animated feature "Home on the Range"), will host a hootenanny with cowpokes from different corners of the world- a Mongolian aduuchin and an Argentinean gaucho. "Malambo" (Argentina/Quebec), presents fiery performers from Quebec who created their own show after over 1,000 performances in Cirque du Soleil's world tour of "Saltimbanco". They showcase traditional Argentine percussion and dance married to the passion of Flamenco, including rhythmic stomp-dancing inspired by the cowboys of Argentina - the legendary gauchos.
There will be three "World Samplers", including one with Puget Sound area groups: Mexican folklorico music and dance from "Bailadores de Bronce", hot Cuban rumba and nueva salsa from "Cambalache", and romantic Argentine tango from Seattle's "Tangoing".
The festival begins with an opening night International Variety Show celebration at the Seattle Center's Bagley Wright Theatre on May 15th at 7:00 p.m. with a number of the festival's international artists performing excerpts from their shows.
Throughout the week there will be ongoing creative arts projects for kids available throughout the Seattle Center.
John Lithgow will present his show twice on May 17th and also will be interviewed by KUOW's Marcie Sillman at a special benefit luncheon at The Dahlia Lounge.
