Clark kicks off Seattle City Council campaign
Clark kicks off Seattle City Council campaign
by Devin Glaser - SGN Contributing Writer

Seattle City Councilmember Sally Clark held her campaign kick-off at Bailey/Coy Books on Wednesday, June 7th. Clark, who was appointed in January to replace former City Councilmember Jim Compton, is the third Lesbian in the city's history to serve openly.

Currently the Chair of the Economic Development and Neighborhoods Committee, as well as Vice-Chair of the Housing, Human Services and Health Committee, Clark seeks to "focus on [creating] living wage jobs," lowering the wage gap and providing more affordable housing in Seattle.

Clark will be up for re-election this fall and again in 2007. "Sally can pull it off," said George Bakan, publisher of the Seattle Gay News, about the back-to-back campaigns. "Sally is smart; one of the smartest people I know. Voters will appreciate that."

The mood was joyous throughout the bookstore, as many of the attendees also celebrated the recent announcements that Tim Eyman failed to acquire the necessary 112,440 signatures to put Referendum 65 on the ballot and that the Federal Marriage Amendment had failed to garner enough votes to pass the Senate.

"It was a good day for the Gays," said Clark, sharing in the revelry.

Clark is no stranger to working with the public. She was a former assistant to Seattle City Councilmember Tina Podlodowski and editor of the Lesbian Resource Center News and the Seattle Gay News. She also worked at the Chicken Soup Brigade and, more recently, held the post of policy director at the Lifelong AIDS Alliance.

Clark has established a website ( for those interested in learning about her campaign or who wish get involved. She can also be reached at her campaign headquarters at 206-235-0363.
