A kick-ass, kick-off - QueerFest lineup announced!
Presented by The Seattle LGBT Community Center with Three Dollar Bill Cinema and Bent: A Queer Writing Institute, QueerFest will showcase music, spoken word, and movies on Saturday, June 24th, from noon-dark, at Volunteer Park on Seattle's Capitol Hill. This Pride celebration in Volunteer Park is a vehicle for out artists to be themselves and to showcase their talents in safe, independent and supportive environment. We invite audiences of all ages, sexualities, genders and beliefs to come and experience freedom of expression in every form. QueerFest will bring together a community of out musicians, but the festival also strives to bridge the social, economic, political and generational gaps in the LGBTQ community by a presenting diverse, provocative and affordable event.

For the kick-off year, we've created a roster of local and national out-musicians that are focused on LGBT community, queer issues, and raising awareness of all LGBTQ people. The focus of QueerFest is music and spoken word, but we're also showing our annual movie-in-the-park - Victor, Victoria! Festivities start at noon and run till dusk when the movie starts.

Our lineup includes: Scott Free, the queer-rock singer/songwriter extraordinaire, is one of America's leading openly-gay male artists. His sometimes humorous, sometimes angry, always touching songs of queer life have gained him acclaim in both gay and straight media across the globe. He received two Outmusic Awards in 2005. He was named Outmusician of the Year for his CD 'They Call Me Mr. Free' and his community activism. His song "Another Day of the Cruelty" was named Out Song of the Year.

The Von Foxies: Seattle's newest burlesque power-trio: Pidgeon Von Tramp, Heidi Von Haught and Elsa Von Schmaltz. They have honed their skills under the bright lights of the Emerald City stages and have been taking their little town by storm since November of '04.

Tara Hardy and Bent Performers: The femme dyke working class poet populist of Seattle, as well as Seattle's 2002 Grand Slam Champion. Also in 2002, she performed with the Rolling Thunder Democracy Tour, then toured with Stramboli's Island of Donkeys and Dolls. She published in Without A Net, by Seal Press, edited by Michelle Tea and has an MFA in fiction writing from Norwich University. She has been teaching queer writing classes for four years and is the Director of Bent writing institute. Throughout the day, Tara and fellow Bent performers will stop you in your tracks with spoken word performances to highlight what queer is all about.

Dudley Saunders: Described by critics as "surreal, modern folk tales," Dudley's performance pieces were a fixture on New York's East Village scene in the late '80s. But as he began to merge the Appalachian music of his native Kentucky with the post-modern jazz he heard at the legendary Knitting Factory, he began to draw an entirely new audience of adventurous music lovers who convinced him to concentrate his creative energies on his unusual songcraft.

Scream Club: Scream Club links feminism to broader political struggles and other modes of oppression. It's this more expansive form of feminism, as well as their driving beats that enables them to speak to a bigger audience than their riot-grrrl predecessors, Le Tigre. They will rock you.

Katastrophe: (aka rocco kayiatos) is an up-and-coming, genre-busting, emo-hop mc, whose stunning lyrical skills merge with beats that slide from slick to raw to solid to eccentric, creating a sonic otherworld that snags you in a dance-trance while teasing your head with rhymes that snap, pop and educate. Recently crowned producer of the year by out music awards, katastrophe's beats rev and surprise, inspired by the grime craze and emo scene as well as both traditional and underground hip hop. A hybrid sound that challenges genre, katastrophe fills his layered beats with lyics that rif on pop culture, slide into personal revelation, call bullshit on contemporary culture, offer a ragged hope for revolution and flirt with a pretty girl on the dance floor, all in the course of a song.

Queen Bees: The Queen Bees began building their hive in 2002 at the Femme Show at The ReBar and haven't looked back. From performing at the Dyke March in 2003 and 2004 (and this year!), to the Wicked Womyn Fest, they are sure to rouse Volunteer Park.

669: With their debut album, Touch the Sky, fresh off the press in July, 2004, 669 insinuates itself into the alternative music scene. Their melodies ensnare the ear like a musical bear trap carefully set over pop oriented instrumentals. The lyrical content is equally divided between the thoughtful and the hormonal, covering a range of themes from civil liberties to sexual liberties. The sound is a blend of elements taken from the new wave of the 80s and 90s, country power ballads, intimate jazz vocals and contemporary alternative rock. It's a bit Belle and Sebastian, a bit more They Might Be Giants, and some Bare Naked Ladies.

The Erika Wright Band: The Erika Wright Band is a dynamic band that encapsulates all the sounds of indie rock, power pop, and hard blues vocals. The band incorporates traditional songwriting with unconventional song structures that will leave your soul aching and your head banging. With the cards falling into the right place, the band has seen a huge fan following in the time that they have been playing the Seattle scene and receives a great response from every venue/event they play. With a sound that is familiar, but new, The Erika Wright Band will leave you feeling like you just have to hear the next song.

Our fabulous QueerFest emcees are the incomparable Aleksa Manila and "Mom" Findley.

So, bring a blanket, a picnic lunch, some sunscreen and enjoy a day in the sun (hopefully!). More details on artists are on www.seattlelgbt.org.

Happy Pride!
