| In the Life Media names new executive director: Michelle Kristel to takes the top spot at Gay & Lesbian newsmagazine on PBS |
NEW YORK, NY - In The Life Media's Board of Trustees announced on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 the promotion of Deputy Director Michelle Kristel to the position of Executive Director. Kristel, who has been with the organization for 4 years, replaced Brian Dean who left In the Life to join New Jersey Cares as its Executive Director. Kristel transitioned to the role of Executive Director as part of a strategic planning process that Dean was instrumental in shepherding the organization through.
"We as a board are pleased to make this announcement today", said In the Life board co-chair Jayne Sherman. "Michelle has an incredible amount of enthusiasm, a proven leadership ability and a firm commitment to delivering the highest quality LGBT newsmagazine possible on public television."
Prior to joining In the Life, Kristel enjoyed a long and accomplished career on Wall Street, where she worked for over a decade. Highlights include being an Assistant Vice President in the Legal and Compliance Department at Oppenheimer & Co., and Vice President of bond and equity trading for various firms including Dean Witter Reynolds. In 1996 Kristel left Wall Street and continued her career as a financial consultant while earning a Masters Degree from New York University. Kristel also took this time to write a novel, which she completed in 2001.
Driven by her interest in television as a catalyst for social change, Kristel joined In the Life as an intern in April 2002 and was soon hired on full time as production manger in October of that year. Kristel was promoted to operations director in July of 2003 and then again to deputy director in October 2004.
As Executive Director Kristel is responsible for all agency operations, programming, fundraising procurement and manages the agency's $1.6 million dollar operating budget. Among her first steps, Kristel has tasked department directors to adhere to a more streamlined approach to business practice in an effort to maximize internal resources and staff talent.
"The television landscape has changed quite a bit since In the Life first aired in 1992", Kristel said. "With the advent of premium and cable based LGBT centric shows on the air today, In the Life is constantly working to raise the bar in an effort to keep our show fresh, while remaining true to our roots in public television - a medium that has served us very well. We begin our fifteenth season this October and now deliver our show to approximately 140 public television stations nationwide each month. This is quite a leap from the 6 initial public television stations that originally aired us in 1992. There is still much work to be done however. I remain proud to be involved with an award winning show like In the Life where we get to tell relevant stories about our LGBT Communities", Kristel concluded.
In the Life is the TV newsmagazine of record on Gay and lesbian life in America. A three-time Emmy Award nominee, In the Life blends hard-hitting journalism and bold commentary for a no-holds-barred look at Gay and lesbian life. A television pioneer, the show launched in 1992 and became the country's first regularly scheduled Gay-themed program. Currently in its 14th season, In the Life is broadcast on over 140 public television stations nationwide, reaching 70% of all US households. Headquartered in New York City, In the Life is produced by In the Life Media, Inc., and a not-for-profit 501(c) (3), member-supported educational corporation.
