Jamaican Gay activist, founder of Muslim LGBT group among featured speakers

CHICAGO, IL -- Amnesty International USA will host a one-day conference in Chicago on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) human rights across the world at the start of the Gay Games VII Sports and Cultural Festival on July 15th from 10 AM - 4 PM at Roosevelt University (430 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago). The conference, Global Pride, Global Action: Empowering the Spirit of Human Rights, will scrutinize rights abuses against LGBT people at home and abroad and identify ways participants can take action to help end them. The conference is open to journalists.

Speakers will include Gareth Williams, Co-Chair of the Jamaican Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals & Gays (J-FLAG), the only LGBT organization in Jamaica, who will talk about the fight against homophobic violence there, where abuses range from constant verbal assaults to physical attacks, including rape and murder.

The morning plenary will focus on the intersection of Islam and LGBT rights, and will feature Faisal Alam, a U.S. Muslim activist of Pakistani descent and the founder of Al-Fatiha, an international organization dedicated to supporting LGBT Muslims. Joining Alam will be Parvez Sharma, a Gay Muslim filmmaker who is currently directing In the Name of Allah, which examines the intersection of Islam and homosexuality.

Also featured at the conference will be Doria Roberts, the singer/songwriter and social activist listed by OUT magazine as one of the country's 100 most influential LGBTQ people, and Michael Heflin, the founding Director of OUTfront, AIUSA's program on LGBT Human Rights.
