Lady In the Water

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan

Starring: Paul Giamatti, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeffrey Wright,

Bob Balaban, Sarita Choudhury, Cindy Cheung, Nash Gray-Cabey

Now playing

I've read a couple of reviews (one was particularly nasty). But I will go out on a limb and say that I liked M. Night Shymalan's newest film, 'Lady In The Water'. In fact, I'd see it again and not with my arm having to be twisted either.

I liked the fact that there was a cast that didn't look like they'd just left 'Friends' and the apartment building reminds me of the one I live in, in that there's a group of very colorful tenants, all with stories.

But the thing that appealed to me (and the friend who accompanied me) was the innocent way the film both thrilled and scared me a little, much like a typical fairytale. After all, the flying monkeys in 'The Wizard of Oz' still scare me. And the story of a man who finds a water nympth in his pool, and has to solve the riddle around her appearance, then keep her safe, until she returns to her world was very appealing. I liked the 'everymaness' of it; that an ordinary guy, a guy who stuttered, could become the hero and also join all of his unusual neighbors together in the goal of helping this mysterious young woman (Bryce Dallas Howard, who was also in Shymalan's 'The Village', which I also loved).

I've become more and more of a Shyamalan fan with each film. I'd say, go and see this film for yourself, and go with an open mind, and be prepared to experience wonder, joy, hope and yes, even fear, but mostly to be uplifted. All of this I felt after I saw 'Lady In the Water', and like I said, I'd happily see it again, to feel all of that all over again.
