[Editors Note: The following is a statement from the Legal Marriage Alliance's Board of Directors.] With last month's state supreme court decision, our community has entered a new phase on the road to full marriage equality. Our efforts continue to focus on creating public support and working in the legislature to build a majority for marriage equality for same-sex couples. We have no doubt that the Democratic candidates in the 43rd District will be strong supporters of our efforts. But beyond even the most heartfelt general support, intimate knowledge of the breadth of the state's marriage-triggered laws will be instrumental in blazing our trail in Washington state. Such knowledge can help us avoid hasty acceptance of civil unions, facilitate progress via the California model, or file the strongest possible full marriage bill. One candidate - Jamie Pedersen - has the detailed knowledge that will be critical to steering a successful route to marriage equality. Jamie wrote the "RCW Project" report on the LMA site [http://www.lmaw.org/rcw_project.htm] that lists the state's 423 marriage-triggered laws. As Board Secretary, he helped guide LMA through its middle years. We know Jamie to be knowledgeable, highly articulate, approachable, and persuasive. We know that he will not merely support our efforts; as someone who has already worked tirelessly on the issue, he will be sought out as a resource by his fellow legislators. The primary is Tuesday, September 19. The race will likely be decided that day, so time is of the essence.
