Capitol Hill Arts Center
Featuring Pure Cirkus
September 9th&10th
The 'Madhatter's Tea Party' featured fire eaters and a 'dormouse' that danced with fire and ate fire, as well as a different 'Alice' from the 'Alice' that is introduced to the audience, bound to a St. Andrews cross, being tortured with whips by two little demonic creatures.
This wasn't my mother's 'Through The Looking Glass', or the one I'd seen ages ago on my little black and white TV back in Houston, and again, in Joliet, when I was carrying my daughter. Nope, this Wonderland, which featured the aerial talents, juggling talents and sexy fire-eating talents of uber troupe Pure Cirkus, was nothing short of an adventure is sensorial merriment. And believe me, Lewis Carroll would have been honored - maybe especially by the S/M elements, being that Mr. Carroll is said to have had some rather perverted leanings of his own.
I especially liked the decision to make 'Alice' (played by Julianna Berry, Michelle Benedisuk, and Matt Swope) three distinctly different characters, one of them a man in drag. This and the colorful costumes, all of the aerial feats, and the 'Alice' (Jen Morgensen) who was suspended by her skin, a la body modification, made for an enjoyable little treat. And if you missed this performance, don't fret, as CHAC's production manager promised more performances by Pure Cirkus in the very near future.
So stay tuned, and do go and see Jollyship Whiz-Bang this weekend. For more on that, call: 1-800-938-3006, or go to www.brownpapertickets.com.
