THANKS

Dear SGN,

I just wanted to thank you for running the recent commentary from "Buzz Flowers" and to also say "thank you" to Buzz. My partner and I first met him at the old Timberline, when he came up to us and introduced himself and made us feel welcome on a Sunday afternoon many, many years ago. He's continued to always say "hi", share a joke, a gift and update us on the comings and goings in his life; whether at the original Timberline, the other Timberline, and now at the Cuff. Buzz loves life and his joy is boundless, especially when he cuts loose on the dance floor. Thank you to Buzz and your son, for making our lives that much richer. Like Buzz, I like to keep a little of my identity private, so just sign me as...

Sincerely,

A friend of Buzz

Dear Mr. Parke,

[Editor's Note: The following is a letter sent to SGN A&E Writer Rod Parke, care of the SGN. The letter writer has asked us to share it with our readers.]

I have always enjoyed reading your concert reviews, and I find myself in agreement with your assessments virtually all the time. In my opinion, you are the best music critic in town and I share your columns with friends in other cities. May I ask about your musical background?

In your review of Der Rosenkavalier you mentioned hearing Schwarzkopf at the Old Met. I heard her in the same role in Vienna in 1958. The conductor then was Karajan.

Later, when I was a member of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra ('62-72, English horn) Schwarzkopf was a soloist with us one year. In addition to some Mozart concert arias, she gave a most memorable performance of the Four Last Songs of Strauss. She was a remarkable artist.

Again, my compliments on your excellent reviews! I always look forward to reading them.

Sincerely,

David W. B.

FOLEY SCANDAL

Dear SGN,

The Republican leadership in the House should resign. Does anyone believe that if Foley were a Democrat the House leaders would not have done an investigation instead of a cover-up? These hypocrites don't seem to care if your Gay as long as you keep it secret and you help them maintain their power.

And by the way, looking at the mess with the Spokane mayor, the New Jersey Governor and now Congressman Foley; if the religious right really wants to prevent Gay sex scandals maybe they should stop voting for married Republicans.

COMING OUT

Dear SGN,

[Editor's Note: The following is an open letter to the SGN and our readers.]

I was one of three people featured in the USA Today article on the first National Coming Out Day on October 11, 1994.

It is always a challenge for me to consider what my "next step" is in coming out, and I have decided this year to order the action kit from HRC and officially come out here in little 'ol Hot Springs, Montana. Not that anyone who cares doesn't already know that I am Gay.

In 1994, I was a Vice-President of Seattle-First National Bank, and I placed a picture of my then-partner and myself on the credenza behind my desk in my office.

The only comments I ever received were to the effect, "My! What a GOOD picture of BOTH of you."

Even though virtually all of my coming out conversations with family, friends, and acquaintances have been positive, I am still struck by a combination of fear and 'why bother', when confronted with opportunities to "talk about it".

What this tells me is that it IS important to talk about it, and it is comforting to me to know that thousands of my GLBT brothers and sisters will be doing the same.

I liken it to throwing rocks in the pond - one never knows where the ripples will lead.

If enough rocks are thrown in the pond, eventually everyone in the country will know that they know someone who is a GLBT person - and when that happens, a great victory for equal rights for all will have been achieved.

For the good of everyone, I support you and encourage you to take your next step, and be sure to "talk about it", whenever you feel moved to do so, but most particularly, on October 11, 2006.

Here's to Talking about it!

Sincerely,

Jim Toevs
