One of the more positive things that happened last Thursday, before the windstorm that left my building with no hallway lights, no elevators and a climb up six flights of stairs, was seeing the adventure epic Eragon. And even though that was also the night of my killer cold (dragging my coughing, whoozy self out into the cold), seeing such a stirring and hopeful film was well worth it.
Starring newcomer Edward Speleers as the champion dragon-rider and Jeremy Irons as his beaten down, but noble mentor, Eragon brings the audience a story about an evil king (John Malkovich, being himself, as usual), who rules over a once flourishing land with dark magic and fear. Once a land where the dragon-riders and their dragons lived in harmony, its now a place of poverty and despair. The place has a legend that a new dragon-rider will come to challenge the evil king, once himself a dragon-rider who betrayed the others in the name of glory and power. And, it is to this legacy that young Eragon (Speleers) finds himself drawn after finding what he thinks is a precious and mysterious stone while hunting in the forest.
Only the 'stone' turns out to be a dragon egg and when the dragon hatches, he immediately takes to the awkward creature, growing to feel linked to this strange being. Then he hears Brom (Irons) telling some villagers about a legend that begins to sound familiar to young Eragon and the rest of the story billows forth, with Brom, Eragon and the young princess he rescues from the evil king's 'shade' (Sienna Guillory) all fulfilling the legacy that sets in motion a beginning for those in hiding from the king's malice.
I loved this film, the scenery and special effects. Eragon has one of the best and most intelligent storylines since the other film about dragons that featured Sean Connery as the voice of the dragon. And is Rachel Weisz' dragon 'Saphira' as powerful as Connery's, you bet and then some! Go see it if you want a reason to cheer after the mess of that awful windstorm and its tragic aftermath.
