WOMANSONG NOW: Benefit concert for Seattle NOW to be held
WOMANSONG NOW: Benefit concert for Seattle NOW to be held
On Saturday, January 27, 2007 at 7:00 pm, the Seattle Chapter of NOW will be holding a benefit concert, WOMANSONG NOW, at the University of Washington campus, Seattle, in Kane Hall. The public is invited to attend the no-alcohol - all age's event.

Troubadour Christy McWilson will sing and play the acoustic guitar accompanied by her band, Lost Cause, with John Olufs on guitar and Blackie on drums and vocals. Christy's songs are the story of all women, deep and wise - with lyrics you never tire of hearing. She has a voice that is strong, true and "oh so satisfying". Christy began with the Dynettes. Later, as lead singer for the Picketts, she opened for June Carter and Johnny Cash. She has been called a combination of Patsy Cline and Chrissie Hynde, but she is really like no one but Christy McWilson. Her song, "Still Someone to Me" is a strong woman's answer to June Carter's "I Used to be Somebody".

Singer, songwriter, and musician Carrie Akre will be accompanied by Jared Clifton, guitarist for- Radio Nationals. Carrie, the Queen of Seattle music, will play electric and acoustic guitar and sing her original songs. She is now recording her 3rd solo album with Steve Fisk. Carrie was the lead singer for Goodness and Hammerbox, and played with the Rockfords.

Cross-Eyed Kitty is a wonder-filled mix of funk - hip-hop - classical and jazz. They rule the "funkalicious groove." Cross-Eyed Kitty are classically trained Ayako "eYe" Okano on keys, Holly "hollywood" Thornton on keys and vocals and Jeremy "j killa" Jones on drums.

Seattle NOW was founded in 1970, the 36th Chapter of NOW in the United States. The Chapter, Seattle's only multi-issue feminist-activist organization, has played a major role in legalizing abortion, legitimizing the "battered woman defense", eliminating barriers to rape prosecution and identifying "Peace" as a Feminist Issue. This benefit concert celebrates Seattle NOW's 37th year of fighting for and winning women's rights and the 34th anniversary of Roe v Wade. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to WA State NOW WOCA - Women of Color and Allies Conference.
