| Valentine's eye candy: Joshua Radin isn't just selling out concerts across the country because of his looks |
Forget chocolate hearts for Valentines. Try sinking your teeth into Joshua Radin. The pop-folk cutie is currently selling out every concert date on his national tour, including this week's performance at The Triple Door here in Seattle. In fact, the concert sold out weeks ago, with the exception of a few standing-room-only tickets. Featured on the Catch and Release film soundtrack and soon to be heard on a Hilton hotel ad campaign, Radin is moving up the music ladder rapidly. If you haven't listened to Radin's top-notch debut We Were Here (SGN's Best Albums/CDs, 2006), be sure to grab a copy of it at your favorite music store.
On a day off in Minneapolis, I called Joshua Radin's cell phone and this is what he had to share when he stepped into "The Music Lounge".
Albert Rodriguez: (After dialing his number) Joshua, are you ready for me?
Joshua Radin: Always.
Rodriguez: Your Seattle show is on February 13, a day before Valentine's. There might be some couples in the audience celebrating early.
Radin: There could be. People have said they used some of my songs at their weddings.
Rodriguez: Maybe someone will pop the question at your show here.
Radin: I've gotten emails from people asking if they could propose during my shows. But we tried that once and the girl said no, so that made it very awkward.
Rodriguez: Awkward indeed. Do you have any Valentine's traditions?
Radin: I always considered it one of the holidays we get roped into buying something for someone else, one of those Hallmark holidays. But I do have a lady friend now, so I think Valentine's will be a little different this year.
Rodriguez: What's spinning in your iPOD these days?
Radin: I'm listening to the new Decemberists album, The Crane's Wife, which is great. And I just picked up Bob Dylan's Live at the Gaslight 1962. The new Norah Jones is pretty cool. The Damien Rice record, 9, is one of my favorites.
Rodriguez: Is there anyone you're cheering for at Sunday night's Grammy Awards?
Radin: Imogen (Heap).
Rodriguez: I'm not an Imogen fan.
Radin: No?
Rodriguez: No. My friend and I have a running joke about me not liking her. He always plays her music when we hang out together to annoy me. How's your buddy doing?
Radin: Which one?
Rodriguez: Zach (Braff).
Radin: He's doing amazingly well. He's got a movie coming out in March and is busy with the show ("Scrubs").
Rodriguez: Thanks for signing those CDs of The Last Kiss soundtrack for us.
Radin: You're welcome.
Rodriguez: All the members of Snow Patrol signed the exact same CDs when they were here last fall, and then we gave them away as special freebies.
Radin: That's great! I haven't met them (Snow Patrol) yet. I was supposed to do a show with them last year, at a festival in Portland. But something happened to them.
Rodriguez: They missed their flight because of the whole terror alert thing. They're very nice. I took one of the band members to a Gay bar when they were in Seattle in December. It was a hoot!
Radin: (laughs) Oh wow! That's cool.
Rodriguez: Will you be touring for most of this year?
Radin: I'll be touring for the next year and a half.
Rodriguez: In Europe and Asia?
Radin: Yeah, the record just came out in Germany and Canada, and this spring it will be out all over Europe and Australia. So I'll be hitting all those spots. I'm really excited. I love traveling. To be able to get paid and travel the world, I can't think of a better job.
Rodriguez: The last time you were in Seattle, you went down to the Pier.
Radin: Yeah, I had some good chowder.
Rodriguez: It's been great watching your star rise gradually. Some artists explode so fast, but that success may only be temporary. You could be part of a fad.
Radin: The gradual thing is really cool because those fans feel like they found you themselves. They'll stick around forever. You're not a flavor of the month or a flash in the pan. It'll be interesting to see what happens to James Blunt.
Rodriguez: It will. And also someone like Corinne Bailey Rae, who I'm not a fan of, but she seems to be getting a lot of attention.
Radin: I just like a lot of these artists who play an instrument and write their own songs. I cannot, in good conscious, support the "American Idol" machine. It makes me sad to see all these people be brainwashed by the show, who go out and buy these records written by 60 year-old dudes in a room somewhere and have young girls sing them.
Rodriguez: I take it you don't watch the show?
Radin: No. It's like karaoke night to me.
Rodriguez: Do you have a Valentine's greeting for our readers?
Radin: If you've found the person you love, hold onto them.
Rodriguez: Sweet! Well, it's been great catching up with you and we hope you have a safe trip up here to Seattle. Give our best to Zach and your lady friend.
Radin: Thanks! Say hi to everyone there and we'll see you in a few weeks.
