Where It's At
Where It's At: Sandra Bernhard letting loose at The Triple Door
by Richard Kennedy - SGN A&E Writer

Sandra Bernhard
Saturday, March 17 - 7pm (17+) and 10pm (21+)
The Triple Door - $40 advance/$50 day of show

With a career spanning more than 25 years now, Sandra Bernhard has made an incredibly impressive mark in the entertainment world. As an artist she has been successful not only with her groundbreaking one-woman stage shows, but also in movies and television. She received critical acclaim in her film debut The King of Comedy, directed by Martin Scorsese, and later broke boundaries as Nancy, a Bisexual character on the hit TV series "Roseanne."

Bernhard is a Gay icon without ever trying to be one. Whether it's playing a Gay character on television, hobnobbing with Mizrahi (Isaac, that is) or bumping and grinding with Madonna, Bernhard keeps it real and honest. Her fans love that she is never a victim, always a strong and even spiritual role model, staying far away from Hollywood clich├ęs and Gay stereotypes.

First and foremost, Bernhard is a stage entertainer. She was the first stand-up comedian to incorporate musical numbers into her shows, eventually inventing herself into more of a performance artist than just a comedian. Without You I'm Nothing was the film she made based on her breakthrough New York show. In it, she created her unique blend of brash and bold comedy that bashes celebrities, worships women of rock, and mocks political, sexual and social mores. Sounds like standard comedy fodder, but Bernhard turns it into a performance piece, combining musical numbers that are often hilarious and at times even touching.

Always unique and unpredictable, I just can't say what Bernhard has in store for an intimate performance at The Triple Door. She recently ended a long run in New York with her show, "Everything Bad and Beautiful," which will most likely be represented during the evening. She is a consummate performer that will not be reciting the same act from months ago, though you will surely hear biting attacks on politicians and celebrities in current events. Watch out Britney!
