After 14 years and not a single concession to Kylie Minogue, DJ Mr Smith will rock the Eagle with his final set on Friday, March 30, as a benefit for the Seattle LGBT Community Center. The Center will receive one dollar of every Bud or Bud Light draft sold during Smith's final spin from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. There will also be drink specials and a fundraising raffle.
"I've had a great time," says DJ Mr. Smith. "I just have some other things now that I want to devote my energy to."
Since 1993, DJ Mr Smith has devoted his energy to helping make the Eagle a gay bar on Capitol Hill where cruising doesn't depend on an epic remix from the latest pop diva. From Cheap Trick to Chocolate Watch, his eclectic musical taste and expansive record collection have kept the club thumping to a different beat.
"It's this cliché thing that gay guys like female vocalists," he told the Stranger back in 2001. "But I think men are sexier to listen to." Not that he's kept the ladies off the turntables: Patti Smith, Betty Davis, and other women who would've gladly shaved Britney's scalp have all had a gay bar to call home thanks to DJ Mr. Smith.
The Eagle, which has been around since 1980 (it was called "Le Chateau" until 1986), will continue its raunchy rule on the Hill, but March 30 is Seattle's last chance to find Mr. Smith in his Friday night nest-upstairs in the DJ booth, playing good music for bad boys.
The Eagle is located at 314 E Pike St on Capitol Hill in Seattle.
