You don't have to be a romantic at heart to like the campy sixties musical, Camelot, but it helps. Thus, there were a few empty seats after intermission for the opening night last Thursday, March 22. However, for those of us who stayed, the show only got better and better. And best of all was watching Michael York, who at 62, can still wow 'em; especially, the ladies.

If you've never heard of the musical, the story's a tried and true formula that works very well on stage. King Arthur (York) is reflecting back on how 'things' got so complicated, as he prepares to go to war with his best friend, a knight who has betrayed him, by falling for Arthur's queen, Guinnevere (Rachel York). And even being urged by hotter heads, he is reluctant to strike the first blow, because not only does he still love 'Ginny', but considers Lancelot (the errant knight), his dearest friend. So we are introduced to the complicated plot and delightful characters of this time honored musical.

But for me, even more enjoyable than the story and the acting-which was superb, though James Barbour's 'Lancelot' did need a little bolstering compared to Rachel York's heartfelt performances-was the singing. More to the point, the songs were memorable. I have loved Lerner and Lowe's memorable score since I was a little girl, believing in fairies and adoring the idea that a place as magical as Camelot might have existed. Call me sappy, but songs like 'Camelot', 'Lusty Month of May', and the touching 'If Ever I Would Leave You' (the duet sung by Lancelot and Guinevere on their doomed last night together) forever move my soul.

So, be you of the soft-hearted variety, or just like watching folks dressed in simply gorgeous costumes, you must go see this show. For information and tickets, call 206-625-1900 or, toll free, at 1-888-5TH-4TIX, or go online: www.5thAvenue.org.
