| Second Annual Effecting Change Conference approaches |
Organizers hope to build a better world through art, technology, skill sharing, and vision
The Second Annual Effecting Change: Tools for Our Generation Conference is being hosted by the Gay-Straight Alliance at Seattle University on April 27th through 29th, 2007.
The mission of the "Effecting Change" conference is twofold: to bring together activists of all kinds to network and share ideas, and to train them to work effectively towards a just and sustainable world. The theme this year is DIY, providing a wide variety of skills workshops that are useful for anyone wanting to make a difference.
The "Effecting Change" conference came into being when a group of young activists decided to create an event that would bring activists of all creeds together in one place. The first conference was centered on presenting skills and topics to an equally wide audience. This kind of cross pollination was intended to jump-start collaborative efforts and give options to active community members who were looking for a place to focus their energy.
This year's skills-based workshops emphasize the enabling aspect of the conference by teaching attendees important life skills that will be useful. A film festival with media training, a concert, health fair, panels, 30 workshops and an art show will be a part of this year's event. Organizers from around the country will be in Seattle to plan the launch of ACTION IN AMERICA, an activist network initiative at the end of Liberty Walk 2008 in Austin Texas.
Sponsoring and participating organizations include Artist Trust, Verbena Heath, Seattle Rainforest Action Group, Eastside Fellowship of Reconciliation, The Backbone Campaign, Sustainable Bellingham, The Seattle LGBT Center, Seattle Goth Council, RPM, First Baptist Church, Johnny WOW Art Gallery, ACTION Northwest Portland and Seattle Chapters, World Can't Wait, Socialist Alternative, League of Women Voters, Seattle DIY, Liberty Walk 2008 (Austin Texas), GLSEN Washington State and many more.
Organizations wishing to table may send inquires to info@actionnw.net.
The conference will be held at Seattle University's Pigott Building, 901 12th Ave. Seattle. This event is open to the public. Tickets are $25.00 and will include one meal and a pass to all events. Purchase tickets at www.conference.actionnw.net.
